Food & Wine Festival Report and Photo Extravaganza
[MousePlanet's Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix visited Disney's California Food & Wine Festival 2010 and sent these notes and photos. The photos of some of the Festival featured menu items were provided by Disney.]
The ongoing construction throughout Disney's California Adventure required organizers of the 2010 Food & Festival to move into some new venues for 2010, and repeat visitors will likely be impressed with the changes. The vast majority of the activity is on the East side of the park, extending into the Pacific Wharf area. Once you leave the Wharf area and head into Paradise Pier, there's nothing more than a new menu item at Pizza Oom Mow Mow.
When you walk into DCA you're immediately greeted with a giant Food & Wine Festival banner hanging from the faux Golden Gate Bridge. To your right is the Festival Welcome Center (housed in the former stroller rental shop and identified by a new sign), where you can pick up a copy of the event guide book, get more information about the various activities, and make reservations for any remaining Signature Events. As you walk under the bridge, you might encounter What’s Cookin’, a group of chef coat-clad drummers and dancers that perform throughout the day in the Sunshine Plaza.

Inside the Sunshine Plaza is the Chef Showcase Stage, a large tent that houses the main cooking demonstrations. The Showcase Stage has a very nice, brand-new kitchen set, complete with cameras mounted over the work surface, and two flat screens on either side of the stage. This is so much better than the old angled-mirror-above-the-cooktop set up from earlier years of the festival. The Showcase Stage venue holds 120 to 150 people, depending on the event. If you plan to attend a presentation here, plan to wait in line until your chosen event starts. For very popular events (like this weekend's demonstrations by Guy Fieri), the venue managers may select to issue tickets to those waiting in line. These tickets are not a Fastpass; they are used to help avoid line-cutting and the saving of spots in line, but you're still expected to wait for your event to begin. The line for Guy Fieri's 3:30 p.m. presentation on Friday formed at park opening, and those in line were allowed to leave only to purchase food and to take restroom breaks.

The big new venue for 2010 is the Festival Showcase. Located inside Stage 12 in the Hollywood Backlot, the building houses:
- Taste of California Marketplace – The highlight of the building is the marketplace, where visitors can enjoy a number of food tastings. You can view many of the "tapas-sized" items from the marketplace are in today's park update
- Star Lounge – a beer lounge, hosted by Stella Artois. Although this area looks like it was intended as a seating area for the adjacent Taste of California Marketplace, the Star Lounge is actually a 21-and-over bar, and children are not permitted inside.
- The Wine Seller – offers full-bottle wine sales. Purchases made here are sent to DCA's front entrance for customers to claim once they leave the park.
- Festival Artisans Gifts & Crafts – offers a variety of event-logo merchandise (a Festival logo tote bag, made from recycled banners from past events, sold out in under 4 hours), along with name-brand products from some of the featured chefs. The shop is surrounded by a changing gallery of work from local artists.
- Seating area inside Stage 12 – is used for the wine, beer and spirit seminars, as well as the "Kitchen conversations" demonstrations. On Sundays this space will be used for the Sweet Sundays.
The tasting-sized items available at the Taste of California Marketplace, and Annual Passholder discounts apply to non-alcohol purchases in the Marketplace. Available items include:
- Karl Strauss Pale Ale & Canadian White Cheddar Soup with Smoked Bacon – Served in a famous mini Boudin Bakery sourdough boule ($4.25)
- Marketplace Slider – Slow braised beef with spicy mayo on a sweet brioche roll ($4.50).
- Mucho Gusto Quesadilla – Chicken & pepper jack cheese quesadilla with arugula and pico de gallo ($4.25).
- Beer Battered Halibut – Crispy Karl Strauss Woodie Gold beer battered halibut with traditional malt vinegar ($5.00).
- Santa Rosa Pear Salad – Garden salad of mixed greens, sliced pears, toasted almonds and buttermilk blue cheese tossed with champagne vinaigrette ($3.75).
- Island Ahi – Broth poached medium rare ahi tuna with crunchy Asian cabbage slaw and spicy wasabi aioli ($5.00).
- Artisanal Cheeses – A selection of artisan cheese with sundried raisins and sliced baguette drizzled with Apulia extra virgin olive oil ($5.00).
- Festival Flight – A selection of artisan cheddars with sundried raisins and sliced baguette drizzled with Apulia extra virgin olive oil ($5.00).
- Ghirardelli Chocolate Profiterole – A cream puff filled with vanilla pastry-cream topped with chocolate ganache ($3.75).
- Driscoll's Berry Crisp – Warm assorted-berry crisp splashed with a lemon sauce($3.75).
The seating area for the Festival Marketplace is located just outside Stage 12, at a series of bistro tables set up in the courtyard, but there aren't enough tables during peak dining periods. Unfortunately, the venue is not set up to package food "to go," so carrying your selection to the nearby Award Weiners seating area isn't terribly practical. This is probably the largest flaw with what is otherwise a quite nice set-up, and fortunately is something that should be fairly easy to fix if the event organizers can scrape up some additional tables and chairs.
A big surprise for this Festival was the introduction of two Coca-Cola Freestyle machines in the Taste of California Marketplace. When you purchase a soft drink, you receive an empty cup and are directed to the nearby machine, which dispenses over 100 different Coca-Cola product and flavor combinations. Purists can simply fill up with regular Coke, while the more adventurous can create a custom concoction—perhaps a Sprite Zero with raspberry flavor? Alas, the machines are only available during the Food & Wine Festival—Disney says there are no plans to bring the machines to the Resort at this time.

Outside Stage 12 are two additional Festival venues. The Jr. Chef program is located between Stage 12 and the Monster's, Inc. attraction. This is similar to the Nestle Jr. Chef program previously offered at Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure, only in a "healthy" new twist, the young cooks use Disney's Magic Oven to "bake" oatmeal raisin cookies instead of chocolate-chip cookies. The Belgian Brewer’s Collection kiosk is also located outside Stage 12, offering a variety of beers on tap.
In addition to the Festival Marketplace items, almost all of the Quick Service Restaurants in DCA have a Festival-inspired menu item. Items and prices are as follows:
- Pizza Oom Mow Mow: Pasta Di Antipasto – Angel hair pasta with buffalo mozzarella, julienne salami, pepperoni, sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, green olive and red onions. Served chilled and tossed in Apulia extra virgin olive oil vinaigrette ($9.29).
- Award Weiners: Mangia Meatballs – Marinara-simmered meatballs with sauteed peppers and onions and shredded mozzarella in a hoagie roll ($7.99).
- Taste Pilot's Grill: Southwest Pulled Pork Sandwich – Slow-cooked pulled pork in Chipotle BBQ sauce with caramelized apples and onions in a toasted cornmeal bun ($9.59).
- Farmer's Market: Festival Chicken Wrap – Crispy chicken strips tossed in a spicy buffalo wing sauce, wrapped in a spinach tortilla with diced celery and crumbled blue cheese ($8.19).
- Pacific Wharf Cafe: Wine Country Chicken Salad – A salad of diced chicken breast, roasted corn, carrots, artichokes, red bell peppers and celery, tossed in a creamy cumin mayonnaise. (Replaces Chinese chicken salad during Food & Wine Festival)
- Lucky Fortune Cookery: Thai Rice Spring Roll – Chewy rice noodles with julienne carrots, green onions, Thai basil and red bell peppers, all rolled up in a rice paper wrapper and served with a ginger sauce ($3.99).
- Karl Strauss Catering Company: Festiv-Ale – A Belgian strong ale with a medium body, deep golden color, citrus-like flavors and a dry, peppery finish ($6.75).
- Cucina Cucamonga:
- Anaheim Chile Relleno – Battered local Anaheim chilies stuffed with dos quesos and served with traditional ranchero sauce and crema fresca ($9.99).
- Dulce de Leche Cheesecake – Creamy dulce de leche drizzled on a graham crusted cheesecake ($4.99).

As reported in last week's Update, DCA's performance corridor has been temporarily rerouted during the Festival, and the corridor between the Sunshine Plaza and Pacific Wharf house the popular Wine and Beer Walks. A $10 tasting fee gets you four pours from a selection of 12 wines/beers at each location.
A series of merchandise carts are located inside the Pacific Wharf area, outside the Mission Tortilla Factory. Most of these are operated by Downtown Disney store and cart vendors. A tasting bar of oils and vinegars is located in the area, right next to a cart where you can purchase the items.

The Signature Events of the 2010 Festival have been very well received, and were 90 percent sold out as of opening day according to Gary Maggetti, General Manager, Food and Beverage for the Resort, the best sell-through rate the Festival has ever started with. Maggetti said that many events, like the Napa Wine Cooking School, are completely sold out, and that most remaining events are very near their capacities. He told us that there were only 40 spots left for the TASTE event, and that most of the Sweet Sundays have just a handful of spots open.

Disney Vacation Club to offer members one-time-use vacation points
We received the following from Disney Vacation Club:
Beginning April 15, Disney Vacation Club is offering a new alternative to members borrowing vacation points from a future use year. Instead, members can obtain one-time-use vacation points for a fee of $15 per vacation point.
Disney Vacation Club members can obtain a maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points once per use year, per membership. These one-time-use vacation points can be used to book stays at Disney Vacation Club Resorts, as well as vacations through the Disney Collection, Adventurer Collection and World Passport Collection.

...The Disney Cruise Line announced a two-night weekend getaway cruise on the Disney Wonder, departing Los Angeles at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2011 and returning at 9:30 a.m. the following Sunday morning. This cruise fills the 2-night gap between the arrival of the Disney Wonder from Port Canaveral (via the Panama Canal) and the first of the 2011 Mexican Riviera cruises. It's a real "cruise to nowhere," as the ship won't be making any port stops - Saturday is a "day at sea." With inside cabins starting around $440, several MousePad readers and MousePlanet staffers have already booked. We'd love to see you on this weekend getaway too!
...HalloweenTime will return to the Disneyland Resort, including Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy, the new (as of last year) fireworks and Mickey's Trick or Treat Party in DCA. Information from Disneyland.com's special events page.
...Jamba Juice in the Downtown Disney District will be closed for approximately four weeks beginning Monday, April 12 for remodeling.

...D23 members are invited to a ceremony honoring the late Roy E. Disney on May 7, when the landmark Disney Feature Animation building will be renamed the Roy E. Disney building. The ceremony will be followed by a special tribute at the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, which will include screenings of two classic movies in whose production Roy was closely involved: the 1957 "true-life fantasy" Perri and Fantasia/2000, along with the Oscar®-nominated short Lorenzo. Tickets are $50 plus processing and will be available online, exclusively to D23 members, at disney.com/d23 on Friday, April 23.
...Guests and local schoolchildren will help Disneyland Resort in releasing thousands of ladybugs for the benefit of the environment on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22 at 9:00 a.m. Ladybugs seek out pests in the landscape and reduce the use of pesticides. The release will take place, appropriately, in "a bugs land" at DCA, and a variety of other "Earthy" activities will take place at the Resort throughout the day. Readers who, like your humble editor, are disinclined to be anywhere near thousands of bugs (beneficial or not) should probably plan to avoid the area.
...The Disneyland Resort recently released its 2009 Community Report, which provides a snapshot of its corporate responsibility efforts. The report outlines outreach efforts and contributions of the Resort and its cast members, including cash, in-kind donations and volunteer time that totaled more than $12 million. The full report is available at disneyland.com/publicaffairs.
...Refilling the Rivers of America, which last week's rains led some to speculate had already begun, is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 30.

...Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Current Refurbishments and Attraction Closures
Disneyland
- Rivers of America – closed through May 6 for major refurbishment. This also closes all attractions requiring use of the river: Sailing Ship Columbia, Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, Mark Twain Riverboat (closed until May 14), as well as the Fantasmic! nighttime show (closed until May 27).
- Little Red Wagon (Corn Dog Wagon) – closed through May 4 for refurbishment.
- Tomorrowland Terrace – closed through July 2 for refurbishment. The Jedi Training Academy show is still offered while the restaurant is closed.
- Disneyland Baby Care Center – closed through April 22 for refurbishment. The center will relocate to a temporary location next to City Hall on Main Street during the refurbishment.
- Matterhorn Bobsleds – closed through April 23 for additional work following a recent refurbishment.
- Disneyland Monorail – closed April 19 & 20 for refurbishment.
- Disney Showcase – closed April 27 & 28 for refurbishment.
- Minnie's House – closed April 21 & 22 for refurbishment.
- Disney Showcase Annex – closed May 5 & 6 for refurbishment.
- Newsstand – closed April 26 through May 20 for refurbishment. Package check service may not be offered on Main Street during this refurbishment.
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed April 26 through May 13 for refurbishment.
- King Arthur Carrousel – closed May 8 through 10 for refurbishment.
- Splash Mountain – closed May 17 through 27 for refurbishment.

Disney's California Adventure
Seasonal refurbishments:
- Princess Dot Puddle Park – closed through April 23 for refurbishment.
- Redwood Creek Challenge Trail – closed through May 20 for refurbishment.
Construction-related closures:
- The Vineyard Room – closed. No announcement has been made about a potential replacement for this restaurant, though work to expand the venue is reportedly part of the refurbishment that has the Wine Country Trattoria closed through June 9.
- Golden Dreams – closed. The building that once house this film-based attraction has been demolished, and will eventually be replaced with the new Little Mermaid ride.
- Burger Invasion – closed. No announcement has been made about a potential replacement for this former McDonald's location, but an employee publication lists May 24, 2011 as the return date.
- Paradise Pier Lagoon – work continues on the World of Color installation.
- Paradise Park – area closed for construction of new viewing area for Disney's World of Color water show. The construction walls around the park have been removed, but the area is still closed to park guests.
- Corn Dog Castle – closed due to construction in the area. An employee publication lists March 24, 2011 as its return date. During the renovation, corn dogs are available at Bountiful Valley Farmer's Market.
- Souvenir 66 – closed due to construction in the area. An employee publication lists March 24, 2011 as its return date, and "Seaside Souvenirs" as the new name of the store.
- Orange Stinger – closed through May 28 for refurbishment and renovation into the Silly Symphonies Swings.
- Golden Vine Trattoria – closed through June 9.
- Tower of Terror Fastpass – not offered through August 15 due to construction of the connector between Bug's Land and Tower of Terror.
- Bug's Land / Tower of Terror connector – the temporary connector path will be closed through August 15 to allow construction of a more permanent route between the two lands.

Spring/Summer
- Disney's California Food and Wine Festival – Daily through May 31. A limited schedule of the signature and complimentary events is now available on the event Web site (link).
- Earth Day – April 22. Join the Disneyland Resort in releasing thousands of ladybugs at 9:00 a.m. in "a bugs land" in DCA, and for a variety of other "Earthy" events throughout the day.
- Bats Day in the Fun Park (unofficial event) – April 30 through May 1. Billed as a "dark alternative subculture gathering" (but more commonly known as Goth Day), this weekend event includes several on- and off-property gatherings (link).
- Grad Night events – Thursdays May 20, 27, June 3, and 10, Wednesday June 16, Thursdays June 17 and 24. Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure close earlier on these nights to prepare for the after-hours graduation parties.
- MouseAdventure 10th Anniversary Events – Advanced Division May 22 & 23; Basic Division May 23; Day at the Park (non competitive) June 6. Registration is now open for the Advanced and Basic divisions (link). Registration for the Day at the Park division opens Tuesday, March 30 (link).

- 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game – Tuesday, July 13. Angel Stadium plays host to the 2010 All-star Game. The Anaheim Convention Center also hosts the Major League Baseball All-star FanFest July 9-13. Both events should bring added crowds to the Disneyland Resort during what might already be a busy week as Disneyland marks its 55th Anniversary.

- 13th annual Gays Days at the Disneyland Resort (unofficial event) – October 1–3, 2010. Event attendance will be higher at Disneyland on Saturday, DCA on Sunday (link).
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 14–15, 2009. (Link). Expect unusually large attendance levels October 14-17 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229)– This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or onsite at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $239.99/$204.99 (link), which includes free UPS shipping. Disneyland Resort Two More Days & Nights Free offer –This latest deal offers a five-night, five-day Disneyland Resort vacation package for the price of a three-night, three-day package, giving you two "free" hotel nights and two additional days of theme park admission. Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50% at either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
