Diamond Anniversary enters final month
Some diamonds aren't forever, as Disneyland fans learned last week when the company announced that three shows created for the park's 60th Diamond Anniversary will have their final performances when the celebration officially concludes on Monday, September 5. In their place are two nighttime productions that return for the fall season.
Ending their runs are Disneyland's Paint the Night parade and "Disneyland Forever" fireworks show, and the World of Color – Celebrate show at Disney California Adventure. The original World of Color show returns to DCA starting September 6, and Disneyland will present the "Fantasy in the Sky" fireworks show Friday – Sunday night starting September 9.
Instead of the Paint the Night parade, Disneyland will run a second performance of Mickey's Soundsational Parade on weekends. The Pixar Play Parade is not on the official entertainment schedule posted on Disneyland.com after September 3, 2016, and a Disney representative could not provide any update about the eight-year-old parade.
The Jammin' on the Backlot nighttime dance party also wraps up Labor Day weekend, and there has been no announcement of a possible replacement.
These unexpected announcements have already resulted in a surge in nighttime attendance at Disneyland, and to a lesser degree at Disney California Adventure, as fans flock to catch these anniversary shows before they "glow away" forever. We expect the crowds to spike August 20 and 22, as SoCal and Deluxe Passholders return to the parks following the summer blockout season. Those last two weeks leading into Labor Day weekend (and the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend) will likely defy unofficial attendance projections.
The decision to end the 60th Anniversary entertainment at the conclusion of the official marketing promotion is all the more surprising because it marks a departure from Disney's past practices. Disneyland's 50th Anniversary "Remember... Dreams Come True" fireworks show was presented seasonally for nine years after it debuted in 2005, and was finally retired only 6 months before the Diamond Anniversary celebration began.
Likewise, Disneyland's 45 Years of Magic parade ran for five years, ending just weeks before the 50th Anniversary Parade of Dreams debuted. That parade then ran for three years, before being replaced by the generic Celebrate: A Street Party in 2009.
It's true that Disneyland still has Mickey's Soundsational Parade, which debuted in 2011 and was designed to offer a different experience by day and at night. It's a good nighttime parade, but nothing like Paint the Night, which has quickly become the Main Street Electrical Parade for a new generation of Disney fans.
For now, Disney confirms that Paint the Night will "conclude its initial run with the September 5 close of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration," and says that "any future plans have not yet been determined."
What kind of future plans might be in store for Paint the Night? One rumor has the parade heading to Florida, where the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World begins its own 45th Anniversary celebration this October 1. That date also happens to be the second anniversary of when the original Paint the Night debuted at Hong Kong Disneyland, where it is still performed.
Some have also suggested that the parade could head to Shanghai Disneyland, which has an elaborate daytime parade, Mickey’s Storybook Express, but no nighttime parade to fill the longest parade route in any Disney park.
Of course, the parade might just go into storage at Disneyland until after the holiday season, and return in early 2017 to give the park something to promote during the transformation of the Tower of Terror attraction into a new Guardians fo the Galaxy ride and until Fantasmic returns in the summer.
Shawn Slater, Senior Communications Manager for Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment, has clarified that the version of World of Color to be presented after the anniversary will be the "original" show, and that "Fantasy in the Sky" will be the version most recently presented in the spring of 2015.
Slater also said that new technology used in the 60th anniversary shows, including new projection surfaces used in World of Color – Celebrate, and effects used in "Disneyland Forever," may be incorporated in future shows.
Carousel (Inn) of Progress
In 2015, a Disney-controlled holding company purchased the Carousel Inn and Suites, a 131-room hotel directly across the street from the Disneyland Resort's Harbor Boulevard pedestrian entrance. At the time of the purchase, a Disney spokesperson told the Orange County Register that the company had no immediate plans for the property, and that the hotel's current management would continue to operate the hotel.
Earlier this year, the Orange County Register reported that Disney was planning to demolish the hotel to make way for a pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard that would link a new 6,800-space parking structure and a new transit center to the park's Harbor Boulevard entrance complex. According to the article, construction would begin in 2017.
Now it appears that employees of the Carousel Inn have been issued WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act notices saying that the hotel will close in October. A MousePlanet reader alerted us to an item posted on the Walt Disney World News Today website, and another reader shared that she learned of the closure when she tried to modify a January, 2017 reservation at the hotel. The hotel's website has no specific information about a pending closure, but the online booking utility shows no rooms available after October 16, 2016.
As we've previously reported, Disney also purchased two properties along Manchester Avenue, behind the existing Pumba parking lot. Demolition is already underway on one of the two properties, and the three lots combined could eventually house both the new parking structure and the proposed transportation hub. That hub could in turn support the proposed Anaheim Rapid Connection project, a 3.2-mile streetcar route linking the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ACTIC) with the Anaheim Resort district.
The Carousel Inn and Suites property provides the missing link between the Disneyland Resort, and construction of a pedestrian bridge would help reduce street-level congestion at the already busy Harbor entrance. However, we note that the Disneyland Monorail track runs parallel to Harbor Boulevard at that location. Maybe it's time to relaunch the rumors of a city-wide monorail project?
Steakhouse 55 serves up Trick or Tea
The Classic Afternoon Tea at the Disneyland Hotel's Steakhouse 55 will receive a "haunted" makeover for just one month, starting September 30. "Trick or Tea" will offer a new Halloween-inspired menu, with apple pie green tea, maple pecan scones, and chocolate-covered strawberries decorated like pumpkins and Pumpkin Kings.
The tea is offered Friday through Sunday, and reservations open 60 days in advance. The cost is $50 for the Classic Tea Party and $65 for the Premium Tea Party, which includes an appetizer salad, glass of sparking wine and a package of sweets to take home. Guests of all ages can order the Kids Tea Party for $35.

Getting ready for the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend
Runners are gearing up for the Disneyland Half Marathon events, to be held over Labor Day weekend at the Disneyland Resort. runDisney last week revealed all of the medal designs for the 2016 event, which include the first 5K medal made of metal, to be issued after runDisney announced a switch from rubber 5K medals.
For some runners, the events really are all about the bling, and Melissa Martin-Mayorgas of Team Muscle Makers said her charity running team received a flood of requests for last-minute registrations once the medal designs were released.
Sharp-eyed readers also found the course certification filings for the Disneyland Half Marathon and Disneyland 10K events. The courses are slightly different due to the Star Wars Land construction, so if you're the type of runner who really likes to plan your runs, click on the links to view the routes.

The event is sold out, but guests visiting the resort Thursday night should expect large crowds in Downtown Disney. - Back to Disneyland Saturday – Saturday, August 20. This will be the first Saturday that Deluxe annual passholders can use their passes for admission since Saturday blackouts started in March, 2016. It is typically a very busy day at Disneyland.
- Back to Disneyland Monday – Monday, August 22. This will be the first day that Southern California and Southern California Select annual passholders can use their passes for admission following the summer blockout season. It is typically a very busy day at Disneyland.

2017
- 2017 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 12–15, 2017. Registration is still open for the Half Marathon event. All other race distances are sold out through runDisney, but charities like Team Muscle Makers have space available.
- "Use it or lose it" weekend – January 28–29, 2017. Our designation for the final weekend of January, which marks the deadline for cast members, community groups, and Club 33 members to use their remaining complementary admission tickets from the 2016 allocation.
- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.
- D23 Expo – July 14–16, 2017. Tickets are now on sale through the official D23 website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

2016
- Admissions Day/Labor Day Weekend – September 2–5. Most Los Angeles schools have a 4-day weekend.
- Columbus Day – Monday, October 10. Many locals schools are closed.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.
2017
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 16.
- Cesar Chavez Day – Friday, March 31. Many locals schools are closed.
- Spring Break – March 13 – April 14. The 4-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Southern California CityPASS |
2016 Southern California CityPASS ($329/$294) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2016. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $38/$30. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. I am so excited over the metal 5K Medal news. I participated in the RunDisney Shorts and was blown away by the size and weight of the medals. I thought that if they can make these gorgeous medals for a VIRTUAL race, then why don't they do something nicer for the 5Ks? I definitely spend more money on those since I don 't live locally and have to get a hotel to participate in the actual races. I wasn't sure if I was going to do the Neverland 5K again but this has decided it for me. I hope Tink is featured on the 5K medal somewhere....:-)
