Disney kicks off 2017 Food & Wine Festival

The 2017 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival has officially begun, and the new year brings some welcome changes to the hopefully annual event. As we did last year, MousePlanet will publish a weekly guide to the Food and Wine Festival, listing the hightlights for each week. We invite you to bookmark that guide, and refer to it as you make plans to visit. You can find the guide for March 10–16 at this link, and we'll publish a new guide this Friday.

The first thing you may notice upon arriving at the resort is the Festival Information Booth in the west esplanade. Here you can pick up a festival map and schedule, check on the availability of added-cost events, and ask questions of the Guest Relations cast members at the booth.

Once inside DCA, you'll find that the layout of the festival has changed slightly. While the majority of the Festival Marketplace booths are still arranged along the performance corridor between from Buena Vista Steet to Paradise Pier, there are now three Festival Marketplace booths placed in Hollywood Land.

The In the Kitchen events and culinary demonstrations are held on the big stage inside the Festival Showplace. A smaller stage is the venue for some of the beer and spirit classes. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Also in Hollywood Land is the Festival Showplace inside Stage 17, where many of the signature events are held. The Festival Showplace also contains a gift shop, Adventures by Disney booth, a Cutco sales booth, and an easy-to-miss wine tasting opportunity. Wine enthusiasts can purchase one-, two-, or five-ounce pours of 10 different wines, with prices ranging from $2.25 to $24. The wines are displayed and served from trendy Wineemotion dispensers, which keep them at precise temperatures and help avoid oxidation. Unfortunately it's a bit awkward to order and pay for the wine, as you have to first decide what wine(s) you want to taste, then go across the room and pay at a register in the gift shop, then return with your receipt. This would be a great place to add a handheld register, to make the process a bit more comfortable.

A small gift shop, a Cutco booth, and an Adventures by Disney kiosk round out the offerings inside the Festival Showplace. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The complimentary culinary demonstrations and lifestyle seminars are presented on the Backlot Stage each Friday through Sunday. For the first weekend, Disney did not print a schedule of these presentations on the festival schedule, and that information is not available on the Disney website. Instead, the schedule is posted on one of the directional signs around the festival. This seems inconvenient for visitors, and makes it difficult to plan to see a specific presentation.

Paradise Gardens is the home for the new Festival Beer Garden. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

On the opposite side of the park in Paradise Pier is the new Festival Beer Garden. A shade structure in Paradise Pier was converted into a stand-up bar, with offerings from Anaheim and Southern California breweries on tap. The nearby Paradise Garden Grill has a new beer garden-inspired menu.

The Paradise Garden bandstand has an outstanding entertainment line-up during the festival, from the Grammy award-winning Mariachi Divas to the a cappella ensemble m-pact. The stage in Paradise Park also offers live entertainment througout the day. The performance schedule is also not printed on the weekly festival guide, but is available from the Disneyland website. Make it a point to look online before you go, or find one of the directional signs and look for the daily schedule when you arrive.

Merchandise for the festival, including a collection designed exclusively for annual passholders, is available at several locations throughout DCA. In addition to the gift shop inside the Festival Showplace, the Studio Store in Hollywood Land and Seaside Souvenirs in Paradise Pier have the full selection. There are also outside vendors scattered throughout the park, offering everything from gourmet olive oil to handmade soaps.

As with the 2016 event, the Off the Page shop on Hollywood Boulevard hosts an Artist Showcase each weekend of the festival. You'll also need to check the Disneyland website for information about the artists scheduled to appear each week.

We have full menus and pricing for the Festival Marketplace booths in our event guide, but there were some updates after that guide was originally published last Friday.

Back for 2017 is the annual passholder card, this year known as the Sip and Savor Pass. The passport is $45, and provides eight tasting portions of selected food and beverage items from eleven participating Festival Marketplaces. The passport itself is a plastic credential with eight snap-off tabs, strung on a lanyard printed with an annua passholder logo.

We deemed the 2016 version of this offer to be a waste of money, even after Disney dropped the price to $39 after the first week. The 2017 offer is a slightly better value. The 2017 pass is valid for eight dishes, two more than last year. The average price of the items you can purchase with this pass is $5.63, which conveniently works out to $45 for eight items. However, sales tax is not applied to the price of the lanyard—but is to the food items—so you also get an eight percent advantage when you use the pass by not having to pay sales tax.

If you use all eight tabs to purchase one each of the eight most expensive items at the festival, at best you save $15 (plus tax) compared to paying cash. However, every low-priced item (like a $4.50 dessert or beverage) you buy with a tab eats into that savings.

To sweeten the deal, Disney has designed a series of one-inch buttons with the "AP" logo in varying color combinations. You receive one of the buttons each time you redeem a tab, and so can collect a series of eight when you redeem the whole pass.

Once again, our advice is to decide what dishes you're interested in trying, and then crunch the numbers to decide if this is a good deal for you. To get the most value from the pass, you need to be prepared to pay for less-expensive items separately, which will raise your overall spending.

If you really, really want the lanyard and pin series—but don't think you can eat enough grilled beef tenderloin sliders to make financial sense—consider buying one lanyard for your family or group of friends, and use the tabs only for big-ticket dishes. The Sip and Savor Pass is valid for the entire festival, so you can return each weekend to try new dishes and use up the tabs.

Quite a few readers have asked if there are menu options for visitors with various food allergies. While these options are not marked on the menu signs, Disney does in fact have a printed guide at each Festival Marketplace booth detailing which dishes are "friendly" to people with sensitivities to wheat/gluten, egg, milk/dairy, soy, shellfish, and tree nuts. This information is not currently available in a portable format—there is no printed guide that visitors can carry with them—but you can ask to view it at every cash register. As always, if you have any food allergies, you should speak with a chef before consuming any prepared food, and make the final determination whether the item is suitable for your needs.

Finally, there is supposed to be a souvenir Festival Passport available for the 2017 event, with spaces for visitors to collect passport stamps as they visit each of the Festival Marketplace booths. The passport had not arrived from the printer as of opening day, and we're unsure if it arrived over the weekend. Keep an eye out for it during your visit—it's always a popular souvenir at the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, and worth a look if you want to record your culinary exploration through California.

We have a thread on our MousePad discussion forum where you can share your experience and impressions of the 2017 Food and Wine Festival—come join the disucssion, and let us know which dishes as a must-try, and which aren't worth the money or calories.

Registration delay and theme change for 2018 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend

Less than a day before early registration was set to open for the 2018 Star Wars Half Marathon weekend events at the Disneyland Resort, runDisney announced that registration had been temporarily postponed, and would open at a later date, with those dates yet to be announced.

However, it turns out that quite a few runners had already registered for the 2018 events, thanks to an extra-early registration opportunity offered to some participants in the 2017 event. And when those runners checked their Active.com registration account to see if there were any updates posted there, they discovered that there will apparently be a change of theme for the 2018 race.

runDisney has not given any additional information about the delay, and the race website says only, "Updated information regarding early and general registration dates to come."

We mentioned in a past update that Disney had also delayed the start of registration for "race support" volunteers for the upcoming Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend, to be held May 11–14 at the Disneyland Resort. As of last week, runDisney still had no information to share about how or if volunteers will be used at future Disneyland resort events, advising interested volunteers to "check back soon for opportunities to staff runDisney events."

Construction Land

This week, a vaguely familiar shape stood out amid the piles of steel and mounds of dirt in the Star Wars Land construction site. I sent a photo to my husband, Tony, for a second opinion, and he agreed—I had spotted the steel skeleton of an AT-AT. Two, in fact, with their heads laying nearby, resting on the ground. Upon closer look, it appears that these are being constructed inside the first of the two attraction buildings under way in Star Wars Land. Check out the photos and let me know if you see what I see.

Work continues on the first of two attraction buildings inside Star Wars Land, but wait - what is that next to the crane? Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

It appears that the frames for two AT-AT figures are being built inside the attraction building. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Over the past week, we've seen cranes lifting large trees into place along the banks of the Rivers of America, creating a visual barrier between the park and the outside world. Disney has also filed permit for the foundation, underground plumbing and electrical of the first restaurant in Star Wars Land.

This and that…

...Reader indiejones shares that Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters is back on the Fastpass network, meaning you can no longer claim a Fastpass for that attraction until the time stated on the most recent previous Fastpass you obtained. For at least the past year, Buzz Lightyear was disconnected from the network, and visitors could receive a Fastpass for that attraction at anytime, regardless of what other Fastpass tickets they held.

...Fastpass return signs were installed at Toy Story Mania last week, though the service is not yet available for that ride. Toy Story is one of two additional attractions that will offer Fastpass service when the new MaxPass program rolls out later this year. The other attraction is the Matterhorn Bobsleds, which is currently closed for refurbishment.

...Pinocchio's Workshop, the child activity (read: group babysitting) center at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, has closed due to the refurbishments taking place at the hotel. At present, there is no information about when or if the center will reopen, and Disney does not offer child activity centers at the other two resort hotels.

...Mini Gay Days at Disneyland is scheduled to take place this Saturday, March 18. This annual event is not sponsored by Disney, but the company usually offers themed merchandise and food at various locations around the Resort. Find more information on the event website.

...Dole Whip-flavored cotton candy is now offered for sale at Disney California Adventure. Cast members were unsure if the flavor will only be sold during the Food and Wine Festival, or if it is a permanent addition. Look for the yellow-and-white striped confection at outdoor vending carts.

...Several readers have reported that Disneyland is not longer serving the limited-run Fantasia ice cream that was reintroduced in January. Reader cstephens said she and her husband were told the flavor was sold out when they visited over the weekend. Reader KimberMama confirms, " We asked about yesterday afternoon, and were told that they are out and won't be ordering any more." The flavor of Fantasia ice cream is a combination of cherry, banana, and pistachio, and is made exclusively for Disneyland. Discontinued in 2005, Disney brought it back as part of the "secret menu" promotion surrounding the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade.

...We reported in November that Disney had filed permits relating to the installation of a new "campground" scene along the Autopia route. The scene will include new props, a steel water tower, an all-terrain vehicle, and faux trees. Disney has filed another permit for electrical work related to that scene, so perhaps installation will begin soon.

...It looks like the popular Corn Dog Castle in Disney California Adventure will soon get an upgrade to help speed service. A permit was filed last week to place a point-of-sale podium outside of the stand, allowing orders to be taken before customers reach the window. The location closes April 17 for refurbishment.

...Pirates of the Caribbean is scheduled to reopen this Wednesday, March 15 following refurbishment.

...Costco is offering a new annual passport option for Universal Studios Hollywood. The Annual Pass eTicket is available only to Costco members, and costs $129. The ticket allows you to make your first visit any day you want, regardless of blackout dates. You can make return visits on any of 219 available dates during the next 12 months, with most weekend, spring break and summer days blocked. You can see the blackout calendar here on the Universal Studios website. Costco is also still selling the Gold Annual Pass for $199, which has fewer blockout dates and includes free general parking.

…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. School Holidays

Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2017

  • Cesar Chavez Day – Friday, March 31. Many locals schools are closed.
  • Spring Break – April 2–29. The four-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday. Based on the blockout dates of the Southern California discount tickets, Disney expects the largest crowds April 9–23.
  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
  • Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Non-Disney Resort Events

Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

Legoland California

  • Star Wars Days – dates not yet confirmed.
  • Surfers' Cove at LEGOLAND Water Park – opens summer.
  • Red, White and Boom – July 4.
  • Brick-or-Treat – Saturdays in October.
  • Holidays at Legoland – November 24, 2017 through January 1, 2018
  • Kids' New Year's Eve – December 31.

Sea World San Diego

  • Magic Weekends – March 4–26.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Three Day Tickets

  • Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $270/$258
  • Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $315/$303

The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017.

You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up.

You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket.

If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.

There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017.

Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores.

Military

2017 Military Salute Offer

Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017.

At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel.

Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort.

We've recapped the 2017 Military Salute offer below, and you can find all of the detailed terms and conditions on our MousePad discussion forum.

Discount Type Description
Ticket discounts

Through December 16, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:

  • Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $156 each [an increase of $13 from the 2016 offer]
  • Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $181 each [a new option for 2017]

Disneyland tickets may be used through December 19, 2017, except that the tickets may not be used April 9–23, 2017.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are nontransferable and must be used by December 19, 2017.

Hotel discounts

The new offer is valid most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2017. Like the ticket offer, hotel discounts are not valid April 9–23, 2017

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30 to 40 percent off, based on room category.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows spouses (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.

PhotoPass

Additional Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

Discounts for:

Everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Snowman Mickey Tote for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Disneyland Throw Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Customers can add a Snowman Mickey tote or Disneyland castle throw blanket to their qualifying purchase for $20. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Southern California residents

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
