Star Wars month begins

May the 4th falls on Thursday this year, but the Disneyland Resort is celebrating Star Wars now through June 4.

The Hyperspace Mountain overlay returns this week. MousePlanet file photo.

At Disneyland, Star Wars month means the return of Hyperspace Mountain, with special visual effects and soundtrack. The attraction overlay debuted in 2015 and has been used during several Star Wars promotions.

Food and merchandise are of course a huge part of Star Wars month. The Disney Parks Blog provided a preview of some of the merchandise that will be available in parks and through ShopDisney for Star Wars month. ShopDisney is launching a new Star Wars Day collection at midnight (Pacific) on Thursday, May 4, with another product drop at 8:00 a.m. There's also a Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary collection launching May 4.

The Grogu souvenir sipper will be released during the Disneyland After Dark event on May 2, and then available the following morning at Disneyland. Photo courtesy Disney.

Disney also released a food guide for the event, and it's worth noting that many of the items will not be available until May 2 or 3. The first Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite event is this Tuesday, May 2, and Disney is clearly holding the new offerings so that attendees of the sold-out after-hours event don't miss them. The hottest item of all will surely be the Grogu sipper cup, which will release during Tuesday's event and then be available to the public when the park opens on Wednesday. There's a limit of two per person, but with the souvenir only available from three locations in Tomorrowland, expect long lines at park opening.

Several of the other food offerings have a different release schedule than just "during Star Wars month," with some being available only a few days and others on the menu through the summer. Be sure to check the foodie guide for details if you have your heart set on trying something.

The second Disneyland After Dark event is on Star Wars Day, Thursday May 4, with two more events scheduled for next week.

Downtown Disney will be the site of a new photo backdrop inspired by “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” Inside Disneyland, visitors to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge can take PhotoPass Magic Shots featuring BB-8 or BD-72. Those who purchase Disney Genie+ can also use a new Disney PhotoPass lens to add custom Mandalorian armor to their selfies.

Guests of the three Disneyland Resort hotels can attend movie nights in May featuring films from the Star Wars saga—check with your hotel for specifics.

Entertainment notes

Fantasmic

It's been a bit more than a week since the 45-foot-tall Maleficent dragon went up in flames during the finale of Disneyland's Fantasmic show. There are no performances listed on Disneyland's entertainment schedule, and the Fantasmic page on the Disneyland website has been updated with an uncharacteristically frank note about the situation.

"Performances of Fantasmic! are currently paused. We know our Guests love and miss Fantasmic!, and Disneyland Resort teams are working hard to assess when we can bring back an adjusted show as quickly and safely as possible."

The adjusted show likely refers to the so-called "B Mode," in which an animated Maleficent is projected onto the three mist screens. B mode is used whenever the notoriously trouble-prone animatronic dragon, nicknamed Murphy due to chronic mechanical problems, fails to work as designed.

We still don't know when or if we'll see the return of Fantasmic to Disneyland. MousePlanet file photo.

However, there may be more damage than we know to the Fantasmic infrastructure. It's worth noting that as of press time, Disneyland is not using the Rivers of America as an alternate viewing area for the Wondrous Journeys nighttime show. Before last weekend's incident, Disney would use the Fantasmic fountains and mist screens during performances of Wondrous Journeys, with a version of the shows animated segments projected onto the Cider Mill on Tom Sawyer Island. Now the area remains dark during the show, with no added effects.

For now, we're all just waiting to learn more about the future of Fantasmic, and whether we'll see any version of the show return in time for summer.

New Mermaid meet-and-greet

Disney last week confirmed a new character meet-and-greet with Ariel from the upcoming live-action version of The Little Mermaid. In the new movie, Ariel is portrayed by actress Halle Bailey, who helped announce the new meet-and-greet in a Disney Parks Blog post.

The Little Mermaid debuts in theaters on May 26, 2023. Disney has not said when the new meet-and-greet will open, but in the announcement, Bailey says "later this summer." The location will be near "it's a small world."

Refurbishment update

Three Disneyland attractions are closing at the start of June for refurbishment. Peter Pan's Flight, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and Alice in Wonderland are all scheduled to close as of June 5.

Alice in Wonderland will close for refurbishment on June 5, along with Peter Pan's Flight and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. MousePlanet file photo.

While the closure of three Fantasyland rides at the same time isn't ideal, these three attractions share a common show building. Whatever refurbishment is necessary clearly requires the entire building to be clear of guests. Disney has not said how long the attractions will be closed, but the schedule is only posted through June 11.

While three attractions are closing, the good news is another one will return from refurbishment a few days earlier. The Matterhorn Bobsleds are now scheduled to reopen on June 2 after a six-week refurbishment.

Disneyland honors Make-a-Wish Foundation with Main Street windows

The Disneyland Resort last week celebrated World Wish Day by dedicating three Main Street windows in honor of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

One of the windows is dedicated to Chris Greicius, a 7-year-old boy whose wish to become a police officer was the inspiration for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The second window is dedicated to Frank "Bopsy" Salazar, the first official Make-A-Wish recipient. His wish included a visit Disneyland, kicking off a decades-long partnership between Disney and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The third window is dedicated directly to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, marking the first time that an organization—rather than a person—has been honored with one of Disney's tribute windows. Until now, the Main Street windows have been reserved for the people who helped make the magic, including individuals such as Marc and Alice Davis, X Atencio, Rolly Crump, and Julie Andrews.

The three new windows are located above the Wish Lounge, a facility tucked into a quiet corner on the side of Main Street, U.S.A. where families making a Wish Trip to Disneyland can relax away from the crowds in the park.

CHOC Walk returns to the park

Save the date for the return of the CHOC Walk to the Disneyland Resort on Sunday, August 20.

The 2023 event has set a fundraising goal of $2.3 million, and hopes to attract as many as 400 teams. Visit the CHOC Walk website for more information and to register.

This and That

...Current members of the Disney Vacation Club can add on points for the new The Villas at Disneyland Hotel starting this Tuesday, May 2. The general sale begins May 30, 2023. The new property is scheduled to open September 28, 2023.

...Clyde's Hot Chicken announced that it will be opening a new location in Downtown Disney, and what appears to be a temporary Clyde's kiosk is now open near the Monorail station. This location serves only chicken skewers, not the sandwiches and strips fans of the Fullerton-born chain are used to. You can get the skewer in your choice of three heat levels (naked, original or hot as Cali), and with or without potato chips and dill pickle slices. We're wondering if a full-blown Clyde's is in the works as part of the Downtown Disney expansion project.

...During taping of the Jimmy Kimmel Live show last week, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt played a prank on fans as they exited Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout at Disney California Adventure. You can watch the clip below.

...The Inspire Key was still available as of press time, nearly three weeks after Disney resumed sales of new Magic Key passes. The other three tiers are sold out. Magic Keys are available only from the Disneyland website.

...Tickets are still available for the brand-new Disneyland After Dark: Pride Nite event on June 13. The June 15 event is now sold out. Details and ticket sales available on the Disneyland website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2022.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
