Star Wars updates – Seasons and Spires

Disney last week narrowed down the opening date for the new Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land at Disneyland to a three-month window of summer 2019. The Walt Disney World version will open in late fall 2019. For Disney, summer means late June until late September, a window during which the next D23 Expo in Anaheim falls (August 23–25, 2019).

While that clarification doesn't offer enough information to book your first visit to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, it does help families know that Spring Break 2019 won't be spent on Batuu, but also that both California and Florida will get to see how (or if) Disney sidesteps the specter of the "Star Wars Holiday Special" in the new lands.

This weekend, during a Galactic Nights event at Walt Disney World, Disney executives revealed that the village in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is called Black Spire Outpost. In a Disney Parks Blog article, the village is described as "an infamous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling around the Outer Rim and Wild Space. Off the beaten path, this outpost has become a haven for the galaxy’s most colorful—and notorious—characters. "

Black Spire may sound familiar to sharp-eared fans who saw Solo: A Star Wars Story this opening weekend. In the movie, the droid L3-37 quips that Lando couldn't find the Black Spires without her. This implies that Lando—and the Millennium Falcon—have visited Batuu before, and may have some history there. It will be fun to see how this ties into the Millennium Falcon attraction under construction in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.

MousePlanet's Alan Dalinka attended the Galactic Nights event, and will have much more from the panel discussions in tomorrow's Walt Disney World Resort Update.

Mobile ordering comes to Disneyland

Disneyland Resort annual passholders now have the opportunity to test Disney's new mobile ordering program using the Disneyland smartphone application for iOS and Android. The test officially began last Monday, and requires users to update to the latest version of the app. Once logged in, a new "order food" option appears on the home screen under the My Plans section.

I got to try mobile ordering during a Disney-hosted test last week, and found that the system was simple to use and surprisingly comprehensive. If you're already familiar with mobile ordering apps from Starbucks or Chipotle, you'll get the hang of this pretty quickly.

The first step of the mobile ordering process is to pick a restaurant and an arrival time. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Pressing the "order food" button opens a screen that shows all of the participating locations, with open locations first, followed by "currently unavailable" locations (those that have already closed for the day). You then select your arrival window. The app defaults to the earliest available pickup, often just a few minutes away, but you can choose "more times" to pick a later arrival.

Once you've selected your arrival time, the appropriate menu appears, and you can select and customize items. Some items offer a surprising level of customization—more than you might even expect when ordering in person. Other items have limited or no customization options (for example, you can remove the whipped cream from one Gibson Girl sundae, but not the nuts).

At locations that already offer allergy-friendly menus, the app lists those same items in a separate section at the bottom of the menu. There is no place to enter notes or requests on the order, so items will be served exactly as described, with whatever modifications you've made. If the app does not permit you to customize an item to the degree you need (for example, to remove an allergen from an item), it's best to order in person where you can speak with a chef about your exact needs.

Some locations offer allergy-friendly menu options. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Of course, the app is programmed to suggest add-on items as you complete your order. In this Disney version of "would you like fries with that," the app may suggest a complimentary side dish or a refreshing beverage. A Disney manager says it's really not about upselling, but suggesting things, like beverages, that guests may forget to order.

When the order is complete, you have one final opportunity to review it, then add payment information. If you already have a credit card associated with the Disneyland app, you can use that card to pay for your order. Otherwise, you can scan a credit card or enter it manually. The discount from your linked annual passport is applied at checkout. There is a box to enter a promotion code, should Disney offer those at some future time.

After that, it's simply a matter to heading to the restaurant during your arrival window, reopening the Disneyland app, and pressing the "I'm here, prepare my order" button. As soon as your order is ready, the system sends an alert to your phone with a message telling you where to pick up your order. Most locations have either dedicated pick up windows for mobile orders, or a designated area of the counter at which to claim your order.

If you decide to change your arrival window or cancel your order altogether, you can do both from the app, as long as you do so before you press the "I'm here" button.

When you arrive at the restaurant, press the "I'm here, prepare my order" button, and your order will be ready in a few moments. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Note: If your order includes alcohol, you must present a photo ID when you pick up the order. If you do not have an ID, cast members will remove the alcohol item(s) from your order and issue a refund. So while it may be convenient to have your teenager run to pick up your order, you'll need to claim adult beverage

It's interesting to note that the app has no geo-fence, and you can schedule a pick up as far in advance as operating hours allow. If you were so inclined, you could order breakfast, lunch, dinner, and post-fireworks ice cream all from the comfort of your home or hotel room before ever leaving for the parks.

It is also theoretically possible for someone outside the parks to order food for someone inside the parks to pick up, but we haven't tested that yet.

Signs at participating restaurants direct customers to the mobile order pick up location. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Mobile ordering has rolled out to 14 restaurants in both parks, and at this time is limited only to Disneyland annual passholders.

A look at the Lamplight Lounge

Last week, Disneyland invited several local outlets to preview of some dishes to be served at the new Lamplight Lounge when it opens next month at Disney California Adventure. We posted photos and extensive descriptions on our Instagram account, so we'll just include those here for your reference.

Chef John State discusses the menu for the new Lamplight Lounge at Disney California Adventure. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

DCA general manager Gary Maggetti says Lamplight Lounge is designed as a California casual gastro pub, offering both entrees and sharable appetizers. As described, the lounge isn't a re-creation of any one specific place, but was intended to feel like a place where Pixar artists and crew would feel at home. Artists from Pixar were instrumental in designing and decorating the space, with items from the Pixar archives gracing the shelves.

Culinary director John State adds that the food is "playfully presented," with familiar food presented in an unfamiliar way. The menu includes both "Bigger Bites," (entree-sized plates) and "Pix and Bits," dishes designed to be shared, along with a kids menu.

The restaurant will offer a unique beverage program, including cocktails, 12 beers on tap, and an exclusive beer from Bottle Logic available only at the Lamplight Lounge.

The Cove Bar closed May 29 for the final phase of the conversion. The Lamplight Lounge opens June 23, and the location will accept reservations for the lower level of the restaurant starting June 7.

We hope you had a good lunch, because we're about to post a whole bunch of food photos from yesterday's media preview of the Lamplight Lounge at Disney California Adventure. First up, an entree salad from the bigger bites section of the menu. We did not get to sample this one, but it looks and sounds incredible. Curly spinach, sautéed mushrooms and pickled onions, tossed in a charred onion vinaigrette and topped with a soft poached egg and mushroom "bacon." Served with toasted bread with a blue cheese spread. I've been obsessed with mushroom bacon since chef Jason Martin (formerly of Steakhouse 55) made it during a demo years ago, and I can't wait to try this version. ^AVP #pixarpier #pixarfest #lamplightlounge #disney #disneyland #disneycaliforniaadventure #disneyfood #disneydining

Save the Date(s) for more CHOC events

CHOC supporters and Disney fans will want to mark two additional dates on their calendar, as CHOC has released "Save the Date" notices for two upcoming fund-raisers at the Disneyland Resort.

Splitsville Luxury Lanes will be the site of the 2018 Rock'n Luau, hosted by the CHOC Ambassadors on Saturday, August 25. Tickets go on sale July 1 at the event website.

On September 5, the Disneyland Resort hosts the 2018 Taste of Downtown Disney. Due to construction in the district, the event will be smaller than in previous years, and tickets are expected to sell out quickly. We will share additional details as they are released.

...Edna Mode will join other characters from The Incredibles in meet-and-greets in the new Pixar Pier starting this summer. The character made her first appearance at Disney California Adventure last week during a media preview, and took the stage in Walt Disney World as part of their Incredible Summer promotion.

...Star Wars: Path of the Jedi closed on May 28, and Disney announced that the Tomorrowland Theater will be used for a preview of Marvel's Ant-Man and The Wasp from June 8 to July 15. No word whether Star Wars: Path of the Jedi will reopen after the trailer, or if the Tomorrowland Theater will continue to host movie previews.

...This may be the final week of operations for two Downtown Disney businesses, as preparations continue for a massive renovation that will bring a new hotel complex to the west side of the resort. Haagen-Dazs is expected to close this Thursday, May 31; Disney already announced that the location will be replaced by Salt & Straw. The ESPN Zone is also expected to close at the end of business of Saturday, June 2.

In two weeks, look for the Rainforest Cafe and AMC Theaters to close June 17, followed by Starbucks and the Earl of Sandwich. Demolition has already begun in a parking lot and service area behind the AMC Theater.

  • Gay Days at Disneyland (unofficial event) – October 5–7. More information on the event website.
  • Moonlight Magic after-hours event for Disney Vacation Club members – Thursday, November 15. Reservations open October 4.

2019

  • D23 Expo – August 23–25, 2019. Tickets go on sale August 23, 2018 via the event website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 11, 2018.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Additional Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

Discounts for:

Everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Holiday Tote for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Disneyland Holiday Fleece Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Annual Passholders

Disneyland Resort merchandise –…Disneyland has once again extended the additional 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Disney Signature Plus, Disney Signature, Disney Premier and Premium annual passholders, this time through December 31, 2018. All other passholders receive a 10 percent merchandise discount. Visit the Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.

Guided Tours – 15 percent off the regular price of six guided tours – Walt in Walt's Footsteps; Cultivating the Magic; Discover the Magic; Happiest Haunts; Welcome to Disneyland; and Holiday Time at Disneyland. Visit the Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.

Dining – 10 to 15 percent off at a variety of Disneyland Resort locations, including Disney-owned and independent restaurants. Visit the Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.

Disney Visa cardholders

Character Meet-and-Greet at Disney California Adventure – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free image download per visit.

Southern California residents

Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 24, 2018 for as little as $159 with the 2018 So Cal Resident ticket.

The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 24.

You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $159 for ages 3 and up, a discount of 20% compared to box office prices and a $10 increase from the 2017 promotion.

You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $45, a savings of up to $40 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket.

If you want an extra day to visit the parks, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($199) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($244) in the promotion.

You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them by calling (714) 781-4636.

If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.

There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 21, 2018. Tickets expire May 24, 2018, and are blocked out March 23 through April 8, 2018.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.

It's Alan Dalinka here in Florida commenting on our local (Walt Disney World Resort) version of Mobile Order and where Adrienne writes:

It's interesting to note that the app has no geo-fence, and you can schedule a pick up as far in advance as operating hours allow. If you were so inclined, you could order breakfast, lunch, dinner and post-fireworks ice cream all from the comfort of your home or hotel room before ever leaving for the parks.

It is also theoretically possible for someone outside the parks to order food for someone inside the parks to pick up, but we haven't tested that yet.

In My Disney Experience at Walt Disney World Resort, you pay for your Mobile Order as soon as you place it, so you can place the order from anywhere. The food is only prepared when you return to the App and tap the "I'm here" button. There is no "Cancel My Pre-Paid Order" button, so once you've paid, that's it (and that App says so).

My guess is that unless you have a significant enough problem that you can convince Guest Relations entitles you to a refund, there is no reason to impose a geo-fence for ordering because of the pre-paid part. I've never had a problem with Mobile Order since its rollout here last year and I've never tried to cancel an order once placed.

At Walt Disney World, there are geo-fences built in to the App that, from time to time, will ping your phone to let you know you are near a location with Mobile Order if you have activated notifications, and it will remind you when you arrive at a location where you have placed a Mobile Order so that you can quickly get to the "I'm here" button to get your order into the assembly queue.

    Regards,
    Alan

Looks like mobile ordering isn't just an AP thing anymore. Disney has been posting about it on social media on its regular accounts.

In our test last week, I deliberately cancelled one, and then modified a second, mobile order after placing it, so it's definitely different here in CA. I suspect the credit card on file is only authorized at the time the order is placed, but is not charged until you press the "I'm here" button.

And yes, Mobile Ordering rolled out to everyone Monday morning after this Update was published. As of Sunday night, it was still restricted to Passholders.
