Jungle Cruise reopens

The dock is new but the jokes haven't changed. Disneyland's Jungle Cruise reopened last week following a lengthy refurbishment that included a brand-new loading dock for the classic attraction. Cast members tell us the new docks make the loading and unloading process faster and easier for passengers and crew alike. The new design provides more support to boats in the loading area, minimizing the up-and-down motion of the boat during loading and unloading. Skippers no longer need to tie up the boats when in the loading area.

Gone too is the safety netting that was added to the boats in 2012; part of an effort to help prevent riders from having their fingers, hands, or arms pinched between the boat and the dock during the load/unload process. Passengers are still repeatedly warned to keep their limbs inside the boat at all times. The ride's capacity has also slightly increased, as passengers are once again allowed to sit in the doorways. That practice also ended in 2012 as part of the safety upgrade, which also saw installation of dock-side bumpers to help stabilize the boats.

Beyond the operational upgrades, some animatronic figures were repaired during the refurbishment, but there are no major changes to the ride.

Grad Nite season begins this week

The 2016 Grad Nite season begins this week at the Disneyland Resort, and continues through June 19, 2016.

If you're planning a visit during this period, be sure to consult the schedule of Grad Nite dates so you can plan appropriately. For 2016, Grad Nite is held on May 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 31; June 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 15, 17.

For 2016, the event includes park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. after that park closes to "day guests."

Schools can choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. Based on reports since the event switched to this format in 2014, the parks grow increasingly crowded as the day goes on and more students arrive. Grad Nites are often a good excuse to leave the theme parks early to take in a movie and a nice dinner in Downtown Disney.

Beware: Formal Grad Nites are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won't appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season.

With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there is no way to know when a school district from central California is sending its 9th graders for their own promotion celebration.

Through the Frozen 3D Looking Glass

The Sunset Showcase Theater opened last week with a preview of Alice Through the Looking Glass, the latest Alice in Wonderland film. Regular readers will recall that the Sunset Showcase is the new name for the old Muppet*Vision 3D theater, which until last month had been the home of the Frozen sing-along show.

The former Muppet*Vision 3D theater is now home to a sneak preview of "Alice Through the Looking Glass." Photo by Alex Stroup.

The banners from the Frozen overlay are still in place outside the Sunset Showcase Theater. Photo by Alex Stroup.

Much of the Frozen overlay is still in use in the theater, including the large banners in the exterior seating area which conceal the Muppet props. Inside the building you'll see the same floral wallpaper and stained-glass lighting fixtures, and the patterned rug. A pair of the Wonder Mirror photo booths displayed at the D23 Expo are set up in the lobby.

To bring an bit of Wonderland to the theater exterior, props from the recently ended Mad T Party have been repainted and reused. There's the giant tea pot at the entrance, and oversized playing cards at the exit.

Basically, it's an overlay on top of an overlay. It's not very attractive, and it just highlights how much the entire backlot area needs a cohesive theme and design. (Keep in mind that the meet-and-greet locations for Spider-Man, Captain America, and the stars of Zootopia are within 50 feet of one another.) With the focus on Star Wars Land at Disneyland, the backlot is probably on the back burner.

Constructionland

Without construction industry experience, my update about the state of the Star Wars Land project is, "yep, they're still pushing dirt around." Workers using heavy equipment are building and carving the earth around the site, and the recently-deforested view provides an interesting perspective on the park. In the photo below, the dirt-covered roof belongs to the long-abandoned Skyway station.

Beyond the Berm

Reader Julia shares that Ninjago World has opened at Legoland California. The new area includes Ninjago the Ride, plus a collection of hands-on attractions, and a restaurant.

This and that...

Disneyland employees monitor a test of a new Fastpass system at Space Mountain. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

...Disney conducted another Fastpass test at Space Mountain last week, with new podiums set up at the Fastpass return entrance.

...The official Disneyland Resort refurbishment calendar currently shows a two-day closure of Star Wars: Path of the Jedi and a four-day closure of Tomorrowland's Galactic Grill starting on May 23. We've been told this is most likely an error, and not an indication that Season of the Force is ending anytime soon.

...The Blue Bayou and Pirates of the Caribbean closed Monday for refurbishment. The restaurant reopens Saturday, and the ride is slated to reopen on Monday.

...The Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge also closed Monday, and are both expected to reopen Friday.

...House of Blues Anaheim is scheduled to close on May 31, 2016. The venue is moving across the street into the Anaheim GardenWalk complex, and is scheduled to open there this summer.

2017

  • 2017 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 12–15, 2017. Registration opens June 14, 2016.
  • "Use it or lose it" weekend – January 28–29, 2017. Our designation for the final weekend of January, which marks the deadline for cast members, community groups, and Club 33 members to use their remaining complementary admission tickets from the 2016 allocation.
  • 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.
  • D23 Expo – July 14–16, 2017. Tickets go on sale July 14, 2016.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Non-Disney Resort Events

School Holidays

Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2016

  • Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
  • Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
  • Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Additional Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

Discounts for:

Everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Cooler Tote for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Disneyland Throw Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. I hope the House of Blues knows what it is doing. We were there at the end of April and beginning of May weekend. The Anaheim Garden Walk was pretty deserted, almost bare of people. The only place that had a number of people was Bubba Gumps all the rest had plenty of room. While Downtown Disney you could barely squeeze through the crowds and all the restaurants had lines out their doors.

They are moving because they need a larger concert venue. Because of this, I think people will follow. If I remember right the movie theater is at the Disney Way end of the Garden Walk, that might help pull people from the front end where Bubba Gumps is.

Thank you, that was a serious typo and will be corrected.
