Destination D23 recap – Disneyland edition
This weekend's big Destination D23 event in Walt Disney World yielded a number of big announcements for the Florida Resort, but not much news for the California parks. Even so, there are a few items to pass along from the weekend.
Item 1: Ahsoka Tano recently made her debut at Disneyland, and now Disney has announced that the character will become part of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue at Disneyland, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disneyland Paris starting in Spring 2024. No further details were announced.
Item 2: Asha, star of the upcoming Disney animated feature Wish, will have a meet-and-greet at Disneyland. The film premieres in theaters on November 22, 2023, so we expect to see the character just in time for Thanksgiving.
Item 3: The event offered attendees a first look at the ride vehicle for the yet-to-be-named third attraction for Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. The ride vehicle is said to combine technology from Stark Industries and Wakanda, and will allow the recruits to travel wherever and whenever they are needed across the multiverse to help The Avengers defeat King Thanos and his band of baddies.
No other details were offered, and we don't know when the attraction is slated to debut.

Disney's deconstructed Expo
During the Destination D23 in Orlando on Saturday, Disney announced major changes to the format for the next D23 Expo, scheduled for August, 2024 at the Disneyland Resort. The announcement offered very few details about the upcoming event, but what was disclosed has us wondering how exactly this will all work.
For those who already want to mark your calendar, the event will take place August 8 - 11, 2024. Disney is departing from the D23 Expo name, and will call their next convention "D23: The Ultimate Fan Event." (We suspect most people will still use "Expo" as shorthand.) However, the biggest change seems to be a departure from the everything-under-one-roof format of past Expos, with events being scheduled at Disneyland, Anaheim Stadium, the Anaheim Convention Center, and even at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

The deconstructed D23 will begin on Thursday, August 8, 2024 with a "kickoff celebration" at the Disneyland Resort. We're not sure if this will be an after-hours party or an all-day mix-in, but Disney did confirm that this will be a separate ticketed event.
Many of the typical D23 Expo activities will still take place at the Anaheim Convention Center August 9-11, 2024 with the usual assortment of exhibits from Disney brand partners and shopping opportunities, plus the smaller panels and presentations. But then Disney says the fun will "extend into the evening" at the Honda Center, where the marquee shows will take place.
New dining and entertainment in New Orleans Square
Tiana's Palace opened last Thursday, capping off a renovation of the former French Market restaurant. The layout of the restaurant's interior is familiar, with patrons still collecting their dishes from twin serving lines under a wrought-iron gazebo. Lighting effects above the gazebo and behind inset windows give the impression of twilight, and cast a decidedly blue tone over the room. New light fixtures evoke lily pads, and there are tributes to the film on the walls and tucked into displays.

I reviewed the menu in an earlier article, and had the opportunity to bring MousePlanet contributor Todd Pickering to sample the food last week before the restaurant opened to the public. I'm relieved that he found the gumbo every bit as delicious as I promised. He even enjoyed the chicory cold brew, which I found to be too bitter for my taste, and agreed that diners should start with dessert first to best enjoy the lemon-filled beignet.

Tiana's Palace has a new Mobile Order window, and I strongly recommend patrons use that option to avoid lines. However, you'll need to plan well ahead to secure your preferred pick-up time. Wait until dinner time, and you'll get the message that no mobile order time are available. It's really not too early to order your meal from the parking structure before you begin your day.

With Fantasmic still on hiatus because of the April fire that destroyed the Maleficent dragon figure, Disney added performances by Queenie and the Jambalaya Jazz Band to bring atmosphere to the Rivers of America. Last week, Disney announced a new limited-time offering called "The Heartbeat of New Orleans – A Living Mural."
The nighttime projection show will "tell a short, whimsical tale of a mischievous little frog," and is set to a jazz score. Disney says the show, which it terms an "art installation," will be offered on select evenings this fall, and nightly during the holiday season. No show times are currently listed on the Disneyland website for opening night, and we don't know if the show will take place several times per night, as with the Encanto projections on "it's a small world," or just once per night.
Speaking of Fantasmic, we wanted to note that Disney restored the fire effects to World of Color – One over the weekend. The effects were suspended after the Fantasmic fire in April.

Magic Key settlement details
Disneyland will pay $9.5 million to more than 100,000 Magic Key holders in a settlement reached with a customer who filed suit against Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, alleging that the company used deceptive marketing practices when it began selling the new passes, which replaced the former Annual Passport program.
Each member of the class will receive around $67, and will not need to file a claim.
NEW: Terms of the Magic Key lawsuit have been posted – it’s a $9.5 million settlement fund for 103,435 Dream Key passholders (approximately $67.41 pp).

In her suit, Bay Area resident Jenale Nielsen claimed that she was unable to use her $1,400 Dream Key to visit Disneyland in November 2021, despite the top-tier pass being advertised as having no blockout dates. While there were no available reservations for the date(s) she wanted to visit using her Dream Key, Nielsen was able to purchase single-day tickets for the same date(s). Her lawsuit alleged that Disney artificially limited the number of reservations available to Dream Key holders, creating "a 'second class' ticket with limited availability."
When Disneyland rolled out its revised Magic Key program a year later, the no-blockout-days pass was officially retired, and replaced with the Inspire Key, which is blocked out December 21 to January 1.
One thing of note in this settlement is the size of the Settlement Class. The initial filing stated that Walt Disney Parks and Resorts "sold more than 3,600 Dream Key passes." The settlement puts the Proposed Settlement Class at 103,435 individual passholders.

A reader alerted us last week that the Inspire Magic Key is currently marked as available for renewal only. This is not terribly surprising as we enter renewal season, but it doesn't bode well for those who planned to give Magic Keys as holiday gifts this year.
General Syndulla visits Batuu
The promotion of the Disney+ exclusive series Ahsoka continues at Disneyland, with General Syndulla and her Droid Chopper visiting Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Ahsoka Tano also recently made her debut in the Black Spire Outpost.
Disney says this is for a limited time only, which is how these studios-funded appearances usually work.

...Magic Key holders who have not yet claimed their complimentary-with-purchase Magic Band are in luck. Cast members tell us some stores are still receiving new shipments almost every day, but they have been instructed not to leave the bands on display. Instead, passholders who make a qualifying purchase will be offered the bonus at checkout. It can't hurt to ask next time you visit the park.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. SoCal Resident Ticket Offer
The California Resident Ticket is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers residents of California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:
The weekday ticket – starting at $249, three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 12 and September 28, 2023
The any day ticket – starting at $299, three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 12 and September 28, 2023
You can use every day of the California resident ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day.
The weekday ticket is $249 for ages 3 and up, is valid only Mondays through Thursday, and doesn't include weekends. The any day ticket costs $45 more, starts at $299 for ages 3 and up, but adds Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to your list of days.
For an additional $60, you can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.
You can also add the paid Disney Genie+ service to your California resident ticket. Although you can upgrade all three days in advance for $20 per day (for a total of $60 for the three days), our recommendation is to pay for the service on the first day, after you enter the theme park. This will let you make sure the service provides a value for you, to decide whether you want to spend the extra money for your remaining days.
Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 12 and wait until September 28 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it's probably best to purchase early so you're ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates.
Tickets expire on September 28, 2023, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.
Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 9 through December 15, 2023. You can book now through December 11, 2023, and travel must be completed by December 16, 2023.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (844) 776-0015 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.

Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – these package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
