Halloween Time begins
Halloween Time kicked off last Friday the 15th, with the return of attractions like the Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy at Disneyland, plus the launch of an all-new Halloween celebration at Disney California Adventure.
As expected, opening night drew huge crowds to the Resort, with the Mickey and Friends parking structure reaching capacity in the evening. Sunday saw even larger crowds, with both the Mickey and Friends structure and the Toy Story parking lot closing at times during the day.
With all of the new additions at Disney California Adventure, Halloween Time is now a multi-day experience for fans who want to see everything in both parks by day and by night. During a presentation to invited members of the media Friday night, Disney managers referred to the festivities at DCA as "Year One," and implied there will be even more to see in the coming days, weeks, and years. Disney may never celebrate Halloween on the same level as Knott's Scary Farm or Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, but the additions to DCA indicates that the company is looking for a niche somewhere between the pumpkin spice sweetness of Disneyland's Halloween offerings and the blood-soaked spectacle of the horror events.
Oogie Boogie's Buena Vista Street takeover
Purple and grey are the colors of Halloween on Buena Vista Street, a theme that begins with the banners hanging outside the park gates. Inside, a new Headless Horseman statue outside Elias and Co. draws long lines of visitors wanting a photo. The statue is impressive in the daytime, but special effects make it truly spectacular at night.

As in Cars Land, there is a nightly "lighting moment" on Buena Vista Street, and the area music changes to a more contemporary Halloween theme. The Buena Vista Street and Cars Land lighting moments happen at the same time, so you'll need to visit twice to see them both.

Each of the Disney characters show off brand-new Halloween costumes this year. Cast members say each character designed their own costume, using whatever bits of fabric and such they could find. Some of the costumes are a hit, like Daisy's bewitching dress, but even the character hosts have a hard time explaining the inspiration behind Minnie's mashup "mystic" costume.

Guardians After Dark
Disney Imagineers say they didn't begin planning the Halloween overlay for the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction until spring. Still, it seems that quite a lot of thought went into the overlay, and it does feel like a completely new experience after dark. Whether you enjoy that experience may depend on how much you enjoy being surrounded by alarm klaxons, strobing red beacons, spotlights, and scrambled video displays.
In Disney's explanation of the backstory, the Guardians of the Galaxy have broken free of The Collector’s Fortress, but baby Groot wandered off during the escape and was left behind. Rocket has returned to rescue him, and once again turns to the humans touring the Tivan Collection for help. Of course, the Fortress is still reeling from the aftermath of the Guardians' escape, and there are monsters on the loose throughout the building.
The exterior of the ride building gives your first clue that something has gone terribly wrong, with a red warning beacon lit atop the tower. The cast members have donned their "first responder" safety vests, which appear to be liberally splashed with blood and streaked with soot.
Inside the fortress, red emergency lights flood the gallery, and one of the display cases is draped, so as to conceal the fact that the creature formerly contained within has escaped. The video monitors periodically cut out to footage from security cameras, showing monsters roaming the building.
Rocket is again in the library, and seeks your help to distract the monsters so he can rescue Groot. The on-ride portion of the experience features a new video sequence with one of the monsters, and a new song by Guardians of the Galaxy composer Tyler Bates.
As implied by the title, the Monsters After Dark version of the ride operates only at night. You can ride Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! during the day, and return after dark for the next chapter in the story.
Cars Land Haul-o-Ween
Haul-o-Ween is a family-friendly celebration in the town of Radiator Springs, with enough detail and references to keep adults engaged. The Halloween makeover is enchanting by day, but demands a return visit after dark to see the twilight transformation. There are four new cars on display in Cars Land, one at the entrance to the land, and three more along Route 66.
The nightly lighting moment has a new Halloween theme, and you'll hear new area music throughout Cars Land and on the two attractions with holiday overlays—Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. Tony Shalhoub (Luigi) and Larry the Cable Guy (Mater) both provided new vocal recordings for the Halloween versions of their respective rides.

Mickey's Halloween Party sold out for 2017
We've been warning in this space for the past month that tickets for Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland were selling very quickly this year, and we expected the entire event to sell out before the end of September. Last Friday the Disneyland website posted that the event has sold out for 2017. If you waited too long and are now scrambling to obtain tickets for your preferred event night, there may still be hope, but you need to act quickly.
Before you turn to Craigslist, StubHub, or eBay (all of which bring with them the very high risk of being defrauded), here are official ways you may still be able to buy legitimate party tickets directly from Disney:
- Call Disneyland and ask if tickets are available by phone – a limited number of tickets may be available by phone for events that are sold out online. Call (714) 781-4636 to purchase by phone. Expect to wait on hold for at least 10 minutes.
- Visit Disneyland and purchase tickets in person – a limited number of tickets may be available at the Disneyland ticket booths for events that are sold out online. However, if you tried to purchase tickets by phone and the night you wanted was sold out, they will not be available at the ticket booths.
- Disneyland Resort Hotels – if you are a guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, or Grand Californian Hotel), check with your hotel desk the morning of the event to see if they have tickets available for purchase. MousePlanet reader Angela tells us that a small number of tickets are reserved for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests, and are released for sale at 5:30 a.m. the morning of each party. Officially these tickets are intended only for concierge-level guests, but we've heard conflicting stories about that, and it seems some guests in standard rooms have been allowed to buy the tickets as well. If you're already staying on property, it does not hurt to ask. Angela warns that these tickets sell out very quickly, so don't wait until the party starts to try to make your purchase.
- Friends or family – if friends/family already have tickets, they may be able to purchase additional tickets the day of the party. Again, a small number of tickets are reserved for same-day sales to help accommodate ticket holders who may have miscounted how many they need, or who had friends/family unexpectedly join them. As with the tickets reserved for hotel guests, these are very limited, and go on sale as soon as the ticket booths open in the morning. If at all possible, get there first thing in the morning to increase your chance of getting tickets. You must have the other event tickets with you—the cast member needs to see them, and cannot just trust your word that "so-and-so already has tickets."
Downtown Disney news
If stuffed bears and remote-control cars are on your holiday shopping list, two Downtown Disney shops will remain open to serve you through January.
We reported in July that Disney had declined to renew the leases for neighboring stores Build-a-Bear Workshop, Chapel Hats and Ridemakerz, and that all three locations were expected to close by the end of this month. Disney confirmed the closures at the time, saying the three spaces would be used to offer additional dining options in Downtown Disney.
Then last week, employees at Build-a-Bear learned that their store will remain open "at least through the holiday season." A Disney spokesperson told MousePlanet they were happy to confirm that both Build-a-Bear and Ridemakerz will remain open through the holiday season. We have learned that Ridemakerz will have reduced operating hours for the rest of the year, closing on Sundays and Mondays, and opening from 10am to 5pm the remaining 5 days.
Chapel Hats will close this month as previously announced, but instead of a restaurant, Disney will open a retail boutique in the space. The as-yet-unnamed store will carry The Dress Shop collection of Disney dresses and accessories. A capsule collection from this line is currently sold in Downtown Disney at Vault 28, which itself is slated to close this month to make room for the new Star Wars virtual-reality experience.

2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants. The Disneyland website does not list the blockout dates for the Costco-exclusive Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass. The blockout dates are as follows:
- 2017 – January 1, 2; February 18, 19; March 18, 25; April 1, 8, 9, 14, 15, 22, 29; May 6, 13, 20, 26, 27, 28; June 3, 10, 17, 24; July 1-4, 8, 15, 22, 29; August 5, 12, 19; September 2,l 3; November 10, 11, 23, 24, 25.
Early Admission – full description available on the Disneyland website:
- MM – Magic Mornings for 3-plus day ticket holders, promotional "bonus" tickets, and Southern California CityPASS
- EMH – Extra Magic Hour for Disneyland Resort Hotel Guests
- EA – Early Admission for Annual Passholders (not currently offered)

- FW – Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival
- GN – Grad Nite. May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
