The Disneyland Southern California Annual Pass is back
More than two years after Disneyland suspended sales of its Southern California Annual Pass, the popular passport is available for sale once again at Disneyland ticket booths. Disneyland Resort vice president of communications Cathi Killian told MousePlanet, "Our annual passes are very popular, particularly the Disney Southern California Annual Passport, so we are excited to offer that pass once again, based on availability.”
The Southern California Annual Pass is $459, and is valid 227 selected days a year. The 2016–2017 blackout dates include all Saturdays, Thanksgiving weekend, three weeks around Christmas and New Year, the peak Spring Break week, and a seven-week block starting the last day of June. The main difference between this pass and the Southern California Select pass is that this pass is valid most Sundays, whereas the SoCal Select pass is blocked out on all weekend days.
At this time, the pass is available only for purchase at Disneyland ticket booths. Customers must show proof of California residency in zip codes 90000 to 93599. The pass will sold online through the Disneyland website later this year. Customers who have the Southern California Select passport can upgrade to this pass by paying the full $130 price difference, regardless of their renewal date—there is no prorated upgrade offered.
Disney stopped selling the pass in 2014, citing the popularity of the annual pass program. Annual passholders who already had the pass have been allowed to renew it each year, but new purchasers had to select one of the other available passes. The current options range from the weekday-only $329 Southern California Select Annual Passport to the $1,049 Signature Plus passport (which includes parking and has no blackout dates).
When Disney ended sales of the pass in 2014, a company spokesman said the pass could return when "renewal rates return to an appropriate level that preserves the guest experience." It looks like the passholder census has dropped to a level to where it makes sense for Disney to put this most popular pass back on the market.
Mickey's Halloween Parties begin
The first Mickey's Halloween Party of the 2016 season took place last Friday, with a sold-out crowd on hand to see the first West Coast Ride of the Headless Horseman and enjoy the first public performance on the new Frightfully Fun parade.
The two entertainment offerings are new for 2016, and join the Halloween Screams fireworks show. Also new this year are three nighttime performances of the Jedi Training Academy in Tomorrowland. Sign-ups begin at 5:00 p.m., before the party officially begins, so make sure to plan ahead if your young Padawan learners want to participate. These special nighttime shows are still limited to children ages 12 and under, but we can always hope that Disney will open Jedi Training up to adults during these events,
The Frightfully Fun parade will be a big hit with fans of the Disney Villains, and especially of the Nightmare Before Christmas franchise. The lead float features Zero, followed by individual units with the four Vampire Brothers from the film. The Mayor drives along in his car, with Jack and Sally following behind on their own float.
The Haunted Mansion unit is next, with the ghostly ballroom dancers performing ahead of the three Hitchhiking Ghosts and a small replica of the Haunted Mansion facade. A team of grave diggers follow the float, raising sparks from the street with their metal shovels as they walk.

Dr. Facilier is the star of the next unit, with a troupe of his "friends from the other side" taking the lead. Right behind him is the large Villains float, towered over by a giant figure of the Maleficent dragon. Sharp-eyed readers noted that several of the parade units were recycled from past Disneyland parades, including the Princess float from the Parade of Dreams.
The whole parade is set to a remix of "It's Halloween-lo-ween," a song best known as the soundtrack of Disneyland Paris' Halloween parade. It's a fairly short parade, clocking in under 10 minutes, but a treat for early arrivals is the Headless Horseman, who makes his ride down Main Street approximately 10 minutes ahead of each parade. The horseman was rather hard to see from my vantage point on Main Street during his debut performance, with very little parade lighting—probably to enhance the effect of the glowing pumpkin head he carried.

I was in a better-lit spot for the second performance, and the Horseman was easier to see. He also stopped and made a slow circle on the parade route, giving everyone an excellent view. People who have seen the Ride of the Headless Horseman at Walt Disney World should be prepared that this is not the brisk trot you remember. At Disneyland, the Headless Horseman's ride is a stately walk.
With so many Villains now participating in the nightly parade, the Villains Cavalcade from past years has ended. Instead, the various baddies—including Maleficent, Cruella, and the Evil Queen—take turns walking to their photo locations on Main Street. The photo location for Mickey and Minnie has relocated to behind the giant Mickey pumpkin on Main Street.
I want to note that Disney did a very thorough job of clearing day guests out of Disneyland once the park ended for the regular day and the after-hours party began. I was asked to show my event wristband at least 10 times during the evening, including twice while I sat on Main Street waiting for the parade to begin. As I've noted before, there's not much Disney can do to round up every single person who tries to crash the event without buying a ticket, but it was obvious that park managers made a real effort to keep the party exclusive to the people who paid to be there.
On a different note, it was a disappointment to see that Disneyland did not join Walt Disney World in offering non-food treats for guests with food allergies. At the Florida event, visitors with food allergies can request a special teal-colored trick-or-treat bag. Cast members then give special teal tokens instead of candy to guests who carry the teal bag through the treat trails. Visitors can return to designated allergy-free centers to exchange the tokens for special treats, which include gluten-free, sugar-free, and nut-free options, as well as non-food treats like craft kits.
Tickets are sold out online for all but five Mickey's Halloween Party event nights via the Disneyland web site, though you can still purchase tickets for tonight's event online and in person at Disneyland. World of Color – Season of Light
The Disney Parks Blog shared more details about World of Color – Season of Light, which debuts at Disney California Adventure on November 10. Disney's Shawn Slater says,
“World of Color – Season of Light” is completely new from beginning to end." Mentioned scenes include Lady and the Tramp, Toy Story, Lilo & Stitch and Inside Out. And while Slater says there will be elements from Frozen in the show, there won't be an entire segment devoted to the sisters from Arendelle.
The latest version of World of Color will run through January 8, 2017.
Taking down the Tower
Even as Disney markets the "Late Check Out" promotion for the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction at Disney California Adventure, the company is already starting work on the project which will covert the ride into a "Guardians of the Galaxy" story line. After DCA closed Monday night, workers removed the Hollywood Tower Hotel sign which, ironically, appears on the special merchandise designed to commemorate the ride's final months.
Some Disney fans watched the removal via the Mattercam, a live video feed from the rooftop of the nearby Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel. Special thanks to the MousePlanet readers who shared their photos of the sign-less Tower of Terror for this article. The Tower of Terror is currently scheduled to remain open through January 3, 2017.

This and that...
...The Gay Days at Disneyland event takes place this weekend, September 30 through October 2 at the Disneyland Resort. More information about this unofficial event, including a schedule for the day, is available on the event website. Most of the organized in-park events take place at Disneyland on Saturday, October 3, and in Disney California Adventure on Sunday, October 4. The event's official welcome center is located in the Trillium Room at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel
...It seems that the Season of the Force is on a quiet hiatus at Disneyland, with new signs and banners in place in Tomorrowland. Disney has not yet said if Hyperspace Mountain will return after the Ghost Galaxy overlay is removed. The Path of the Jedi film is still playing in the Tomorrowland theater.
...The Little Mermaid – Ariel's Undersea Adventure should reopen this week, along with The Disneyland Story presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.
...Goofy's Sky School is closed for refurbishment September 26 & 27.
...An extended preview of the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange will be offered at the Disneyland Resort starting October 7.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. "Utah Escapes to Anaheim") – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Sunday Christmas.
2017
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 16.
- Cesar Chavez Day – Friday, March 31. Many locals schools are closed.
- Spring Break – March 13 to April 14. The four-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass Technically not an annual pass, this Costco-exclusive is valid only at Disney California Adventure for 365 days after activation. The pass costs $329.99, the same price as the existing Disney Southern California Select Passport that also includes admission to Disneyland. The new Costco pass comes with 19 blockout dates during the remainder of 2016, and 41 blockout dates through December 1, 2017. Those 60 combined blockout dates most closely resemble those of the existing Deluxe Annual Passport, and cover the peak Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year travel periods, plus most holiday weekends and every Saturday between March 13 and August 19. 2016 7 2017 blockout dates:
The Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass also includes the same 10 percent merchandise and food discount as offered with the Southern California Select Passport. Like that pass, the new DCA pass does not include parking, nor is there an option to add a parking pass onto this ticket. The new Fun Pass also includes a Disney collector pin featuring Ariel and the DCA logo. If you're looking to buy this as a holiday gift, note that the pass expires one year after the first use, and the first use must be by December 1, 2016. That doesn't necessarily rule it out as a stocking stuffer, but Christmas will have to come very early so your recipient can activate the pass before the deadline. The pass is available only at Costco stores and from Costco.com. This is not a member-exclusive item, and in our test, the Costco website did not add a surcharge when the pass was purchased by a non-member. The pass is mailed in five to seven business days, though a two-day shipping option is available at an added charge. California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

Southern California CityPASS |
2016 Southern California CityPASS ($329/$294) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2016. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $38/$30. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
