Mickey's Toontown Fair

Mickey's Toontown Fair feels sometimes feels a bit like an afterthought. There isn't a lot to do there and the area is small. The reality is that it was a bit of an afterthought. The area opened in 1988 as Mickey's Birthdayland and celebrated Mickey Mouse's 60th birthday. The area proved popular, however, and it eventually grew into the permanent land that now exists. The area primarily functions as a large character greeting area, sometimes it seems like every Disney character eventually appears somewhere in Toontown. What attractions the land has are directed at the youngest children and one, Donald's Boat is limited to small children.

At the D23 exposition in September 2009 a massive expansion of Fantasyland was announced, and much of the space needed will come at the expense of Mickey's Toontown Fair. Most of what is currently Toontown will be removed and The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm ride will be rethemed sometime in 2012.

History and Trivia

At this location: The area that now comprised Mickey's Toontown Fair was backstage or unused space before Mickey's Birthdayland opened in 1988. When the area was converted to Mickey's Toontown Fair in 1996, the addition of Donald's Boat and adding The Barnstormer to Goofy's Wisecare Farm required shifting and shortening the Grand Prix Raceway (now Tomorrowland Speedway) in Tomorrowland.
The Land's History: Mickey's Toontown Fair was originally Mickey's Birthdayland when the area opened in 1988. Designed and executed on the cheap and quick, the expectation was that it would be a temporary addition to the park. Just a way to accommodate the year-long celebration of Mickey Mouse's 60th birthday in 1988. At almost the last minute the project was approved and Duckburg was quickly built. Cindy Williams (of Laverne & Shirley) and first lady Nancy Reagan were on hand to open the land on June 18, 1988.

There wasn't much to do in the area. A petting zoo called Grandma Duck's Farm presented farm animals (including Minnie Moo, a cow born with "hidden Mickey" spots on her side). Minnie's Surprise Party was a musical show wishing Mickey Mouse a happy birthday and then you could meet Mickey Mouse himself. Perhaps the biggest change was the creation of a new train station for the Walt Disney World Railroad, which previous to this only stopped on Main Street and in Frontierland.

At the end of the birthday celebration in 1989, the land was still popular and executives decided to keep it, though it would need to be "repurposed." Between April 22, 1990 and May 26, 1990, the land closed and was quickly beefed up to look more permanent and reopened as Mickey's Starland. Minnie's Suprise Party became Mickey's Magical TV World which presented the stars of the Disney Afternoon cartoons then on television. Following the successful opening of Mickey's Toontown at Disneyland in 1993, it was decided to again repurpose Mickey's Starland, this time as Mickey's Toontown Fair. The current attractions were added and many of the structures were rebuilt to be more permanent. The official rededication as Mickey's Toontown Fair was June 29, 1996.
