History and Trivia

  • At this location: Though originally named Grand Prix Raceway, Tomorrowland Indy Speedway was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom.
  • The Attraction's History: Grand Prix Raceway was open for business on the day of Magic Kingdom's opening in October 1971. The ride remained essentially unchanged until 1996 when it had to be closed for the construction of Donald's Boat and The Barnstormer in Mickey's Toontown Fair. The expansion of that land required a minor shift and shortening of the track layout. At the same time the ride was renamed Tomorrowland Speedway. In early 2000 Indianapolis Motor Speedway came on board as a sponsor and the queue and theming through the ride were updated to reflect scenes and locations at that historic race track.
  • Other Trivia:
    • The cars: The Autopia Mark VII cars have 9 horsepower engines and can go as fast as 7.5 miles per hour (a governor on the engine prevents any higher speeds).
    • Sponsors: Indianapolis Motor Speedway has a sponsors lounge in the control tower near the beginning of the ride.
