Walt Disney World Resort Update for April 9-15, 2019

Writer's note: The #DisneyParksLIVE broadcast of Epcot's presentation of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth is scheduled for tonight, April 9, 2019, at 8:55 p.m. EDT. Not only will the stream include a presentation of the show that ends its nearly two decade-long run later this summer, it promises a preview of what is ahead at Walt Disney World Resort later this year, including the limited-time run of "Epcot Forever" that is due to debut over World Showcase Lagoon this fall as the nighttime entertainment to fill the time until the 2020 debut of the park's new nighttime spectacular. Visit Disney Parks Blog for the link to the live stream as broadcast time approaches, but, weather may cause another delay, as another round of storms are forecast in the evening (like the one that drenched even those of us sitting under the roof during the second set by Dennis DeYoung and his band that was cancelled part-way through when lightning threatened the area). We will recap whatever news is announced next week and will be sure to keep apprised as to any further weather delays.

Passholders that have not yet picked up the Pluto-themed magnet at the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, remember that tomorrow, April 10, is your last chance (if they are still in stock). Starting on April 11, the Daisy Duck-themed magnet becomes available to all Passholders (pass and matching photo ID required) at MouseGear and Port of Entry. April 11 is also the day that Taste Track sells its Passholder-exclusive Daisy Duck-themed cookie (with a very limited supply).

Dates have been published and tickets are now on sale for this year's edition of Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, which will be held from 7 p.m. until Midnight on select nights November 8 to December 22, 2019. Tickets start at $99/guest ages 10+ and $94/child ages 3-9 when purchased at least a day in advance, though each night of the party is priced separately and ranges up to a high of $139/adult; $134/child on December 20 and 22 for which no advance discount is available. Disney Vacation Club Members and Annual Passholders can also receive additional advance purchase discounts for all dates except December 20 and 22. Visit this page of DisneyWorld.com for more information and to purchase tickets.

Brazilian Runners Win Star Wars Rival Run Half Marathon

Walt Disney World Resort hosted the fourth annual (though recently renamed) Star Wars Rival Run events over this past weekend. Dicson Falcao and Aline Freitas, both from Fortaleza, Brazil, were the respective male and female winners of the 13.1-mile half marathon. Falcao finished in 1:15:25 this year, nearly a minute ahead of second place finisher Angel Reyes Adorno (1:16:21) from Puerto Rico, and third place finisher George Darden of Marietta, Georgia (1:16:27). Falcao came in second place last year, and it is the third year in a row that the race was won by a Brazilian runner.

Freitas lead the female runners from "wire to wire" with a final posted time of 1:28:22. She was followed in second place by Emily Soppe of Decatur, Georgia (1:29:17), and in third place by Victoria Phillippi of New Hope, Minnesota (1:34:14).

In all, more than 41,000 runners took part in the weekend of races, which featured Star Wars-themed merchandise; food and beverages; finisher medals; and popular characters such as Boba Fett, R2-D2, BB-8, and Stormtroopers. The next runDisney race is the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend in November. More race information and registration opportunities are available on runDisney.com.

Disney Villains After Hours Coming to Magic Kingdom

Last week, we shared the details of the latest Disney After Hours coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney's Hollywood Studios (including two special themed nights). On the heels of that, Disney Parks Blog announced that Magic Kingdom will host 10 Disney Villains After Hours events from June 6 to August 8. Like the other Disney After Hours events at the park, folks that purchase the capped-attendance event ticket get low wait times at more than 20 attractions and experiences after the park closes to day guests, park mix-in entry as early as 7 p.m., plus ice cream novelties, popcorn and select bottled beverages included.

The Disney Villains After Hours events include a brand-new Disney Villains Stage Show, "Villains Unite the Night," in which Hades and Meg from Hercules will "set the castle stage ablaze" and which will also feature appearances by Jafar, The Queen, Dr. Facilier, and Maleficent. In addition, the recently returned Maleficent the Dragon Steampunk-style parade float from the daily Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade will be out in the park at night for the first time, "breathing fire as she creeps through the park as a one-of-a-kind experience for party guests." Some "villain-inspired additions" will be added at Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain, and specialty merchandise, food and beverage will be available for sale. Even with "Disney Villains" in the event's name, though, villains will not be participating in character greetings during the event.

With the added entertainment comes a higher price tag. Disney Villains After Hours tickets cost $139 plus tax in advance, $144 plus tax on the event night. Annual Passholder and Disney Vacation Club Members can receive a $30 discount, and purchase tickets for $109 plus tax. Tickets for these specific Disney Villains After Hours event nights will go on sale April 29. Villain-inspired attire is encouraged, though the announcement has not detailed the costume policy as yet.

Based on social media response to the announcement, these events may be quite popular. It is likely that the limited number of tickets for these events will be higher than past events, but the attendance cap likely will not approach the high levels we have seen in recent year for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party nights. Stay tuned for additional details as the on-sale date approaches.

Haunted PhotoPass and More

Starting last Tuesday, Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom began offering a new Disney PhotoPass opportunity on-ride to those wearing MagicBand 2.0 (or a MagicKeeper) that have purchased Memory Maker (which is included in most Annual Pass options too). I personally went for a ride over the weekend wearing my MagicBand 2.0, but, despite an obvious flash during the ride, no photo showed up in my My Disney Experience account. I will try again in the coming days.

Since Disney says that this is Florida's 13th attraction photo capture opportunity (and we did not double-check that claim), this Saturday, April 13, Disney PhotoPass is celebrating the occasion with special photo opportunities around Haunted Mansion's exit and hearse, and is bringing the Hatbox Ghost Magic Shot to near the entrance to the Liberty Square Riverboat (presumably where it was located during last year's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party nights). In the evening, there will be evening-only photo opportunities near Memento Mori. Inside Memento Mori all day on April 13, the 8x10 lenticular image souvenir photo will be available for the special price of $13.13 plus tax (and no discounts or other promotions may be combined with that special).

Special PhotoPass photo opportunities will be in the vicinity of the gates to The Haunted Mansion. (Also, Citizen's sponsorship of the clock at the entrance is now also apparent.) Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

If a photo is not to your taste (or does not satisfy it), Liberty Square Market will offer a special "Midnight Fright Delight Brownie" inspired by the famous clock inside the Haunted Mansion (the one that strikes 13). The Cadaver Dans quartet will also make a special appearance in Liberty Square after sundown.

Disney Parks Blog is encouraging folks to follow along on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #HauntedPhotoPass to share in all the photo fun on April 13.

Bo Peep At Disney's Hollywood Studios This Summer

With Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 4 opening in theaters on June 21, Bo Peep will make special appearances at Disney's Hollywood Studios this summer. Exact appearance location and times have not yet been published. Bo Peep is central to the story of the new film.

Bo Peep will also pay visits to Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim. She will also travel to Disneyland Paris and Disney Parks in Asia.

Epcot Concerts & Candlelight Processional News and Calendar

Last week, Disney Parks Blog announced that this year's Epcot International Food & Wine Festival will debut on August 29 (yes, the very same day that Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens at Disney's Hollywood Studios) and will run a record 87 days, through November 23. The three-times-nightly Eat to the Beat Concert Series will only run August 29 to November 19, to allow the America Gardens Theatre stage to be prepared for the 2019 edition of Epcot's Candlelight Processional. The Epcot International Festival of the Holidays will run November 29 through December 30, including the three-times-nightly retelling of the traditional Christmas story by a celebrity narrator accompanied by a mass choir and live orchestra. Eat to the Beat performers and Candlelight celebrity narrators have not yet been announced.

In the meantime, the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival continues its Garden Rocks Concert Series on the America Gardens stage three times nightly through June 3. For more information or for reserving dining packages with guaranteed concert seating, call (407) WDW-DINE or visit FreshEpcot.com. Passholders can save 10% on food and beverages (except alcohol and excluding tax and gratuity) on dining packages for themselves and up to three guests.

72-year old Dennis DeYoung, former lead singer of STYX, returned to Epcot with his band for Garden Rocks Concerts last night (though his second set was greeted by a rainstorm with lightning in the area, cancelling it in the middle). He is scheduled to play three more sets tonight. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

This summer, Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! will return from June 14 through August 18. Star-Lord and Gamora (along with an "alien" band) will take a "musical journey" that showcases hits from Star-Lord's Awesome Mix tapes with multiple performances daily.

With Groot remotely patching "Awesome Mix" music into the headphones of of an alien band, Star-Lord tried to teach them how to become the "Galaxy's greatest cover band" during last summer's edition of the Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! Concerts. Gamora seemed unimpressed. File Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

For the convenience of our readers, all of the scheduled Garden Rocks Concert Series performers at America Gardens Theatre are shown in our Google Calendar of Epcot Events. All of the Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! dates are included as well, and we have added placeholder entries for the Eat to the Beat Concert Series and Candlelight Processional. While our Google Calendar of Epcot Events includes a list of the scheduled performers, it is always best to check the My Disney Experience app, Times Guide, and, yes, sometimes even signs posted at the park entrances and at the theater noting last minute changes. You can add the whole Event calendar to any calendar that supports the iCal format (like iPhone and Mac) by copying this link and, indeed, if when we get additional information and update the calendar, the calendar will update on your subscribed device as well. The calendar is provided as a courtesy "as is, where is" without any guarantees. Given the effort it took to create it and keep it updated, we do respectfully request that you do not post our entire calendar on another site without first asking our permission. Walt Disney World Resort does provide schedules in the My Disney Experience app, but does not allow you to add dates to calendars outside the app itself.

Views Around the World

This week we have photos from in and around Magic Kingdom, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa Easter Egg Display

Bonnie and Donald Fink had a chance to get over to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa this weekend to check out this year's Easter Egg display. The following are some of the highlights that they now share:

The bakery team responsible for this year's Easter Egg Display in the lobby of the Grand Floridian is lead by Pastry Chef Kristine Farmer, from Victoria and Albert's. The team has been creating Easter Eggs for the Grand Floridian for 24 years. The eggs are usually 16 to 20 inches tall and weigh in at up to 12 pounds. They're ornamented with edible products like modeling chocolate, fondant, sugar florals, royal icing, and colored cocoa butter. This year the eggs will be on display through Sunday, April 28th.

Epcot

Speaking of Easter Eggs, now through April 21, the "hoppy-est place on Earth" welcomes "wabbits of all ages" to Egg-stravaganza, a popular scavenger hunt around World Showcase in search of Disney character-themed eggs. Maps are available for $6.99 plus tax which, when completed, can be exchanged for a prize. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

In last week's Update, we shared details of the new Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy that opened on March 31 in Sunset Showcase. This past week, we had one more opportunity to visit the attraction during a hosted invited-media event during the hour before park-opening, so we have a few more photos to share largely free from crowds.

For $125/guest (ages 10-up) and $99/child (ages 3-9) plus tax and park admission, guests will star with a welcome reception at 6 p.m. at the Wildlife Express Train Station, venture to the train station at Rafiki's Planet Watch, and return to Harambe Market. Disney Parks Blog says that guests will "take in sights, sounds, and scrumptious flavors in celebration of The Lion King and the Big Five game animals: the African elephant, the rhinoceros, the Cape buffalo, the leopard, and our host animal, the lion. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to learn more about the importance of the Big Five and the challenges they face around the world as well as how Disney is working to protect them." …Disney marked the start of Earth Month with a Disney Parks Blog post by Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President, Animals, Science and Environment, Disney Parks, showcasing some of the environmental efforts at Disney Parks. Closest to home for those of us near Walt Disney World Resort is the recently opened 50-megawatt solar facility (which we have been invited to tour later this month and will report on in an upcoming Update). As park-goers (and our regular readers) will note, the parks have already begun reducing the amount of single-use plastics (like limiting beverage cup lids to phasing out plastic straws). Its efforts are intended to help reach its goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2020.

Planet Hollywood has had a long history at Walt Disney World Resort and it extensively remodeled its restaurant along with the transformation of Downtown Disney into Disney Springs. Its menu features a selection of appetizers, grille specialties, salads, pastas, "supernova shakes," and Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri's Flavortown creations: big bite burgers and signature sandwiches. All of the images below are NEW to our Update.

On a less positive note, Orlando Sentinel reports that the Orlando-based parent company of Planet Hollywood, Buca di Beppo, Earl of Sandwich, Chicken Guy and other restaurants may have suffered a credit card data breach between May 23, 2018, and March 19, 2019. Guests who visited the restaurants (including Bucca di Beppo in Maitland, near Florida Mall and in Celebration) are encouraged to keep a close watch on their statements for suspicious activity.

Status of Parking Availability at Disney Springs

The two open Disney Springs garages, Orange and Lime, continue to have ongoing technology work relating to the systems used to indicate where spaces are available performed that may interfere with traffic flow and limit the number of spaces available. We still have no official announcement on when the newest parking structure on Buena Vista Drive will open. Those who visit Disney Springs during the weekends or during busy times of the year at the Resort (like Spring Break) know that the garages often fill to capacity during peak times. Even the flat lot on the West Side can fill up during very busy times! Keep an eye on the overhead signs along Buena Vista Drive directing cars to the garages and lots with availability.

Watch overhead signs on Buena Vista Drive to see which parking locations may have available spaces. File photo by Alan S. Dalinka (pixilation caused by the difference between the sign's refresh rate and the camera; to the photographer's eyes, the sign did not pixilate in person).

Current Discounts and Promotions

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Walt Disney World Resort Update. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the intended audience. Check out the category that best matches you, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers.

Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. It is increasingly true that non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). As prices go up, it becomes even more important to pay heed: Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
