Writer's note: Right after we published last week's Update and noted the scheduled Silver and Weekday Select Passholder blockouts, Walt Disney World Resort announced that they were lifted through June 29 (of course, Weekday Select passholders still are blocked on weekends). Gold and higher Passholders are even being encouraged to "Bring-a-Friend" with $79 (plus tax) one day Park Hopper tickets. Perhaps the folks who see the numbers feel there can be a bit of improvement in these weeks leading up to the opening of Toy Story Land on June 30.

Here in Central Florida, for the most part, schools are out for summer, so there are certainly local families thinking about making a few additional visits. As always in the parks, be prepared for crowds and, like I was on Saturday afternoon, be delighted when they feel smaller. With the Flower & Garden Festival kiosks mostly removed from the World Showcase Promenade, Epcot certainly "feels" bigger than it has in a long time.

You can get a bit more of my take on the Walt Disney World Resort summer season (and hear the head cold I picked up in the parks earlier this month) by listening to my latest appearance on The Garry Meier Show podcast. You can jump to 23:45 in Episode 339 to listen to just my segment or, as I do regularly, listen to the whole show, which is embedded below (while my segment is family and all-location friendly, other portions of Garry's shows may include bits of adult language and humor that may not be appropriate for all ages or in all settings and this episode's title hints at that too).

Guardians of the Galaxy Join the Incredible Summer

As we discussed last week and the week before, the resort-wide "celebration" (marketing theme) right now is the Incredible Summer, which runs through September 3 (Labor Day). The celebration includes Donald's Dino-Dash in DinoLand U.S.A., which debuted at Disney's Animal Kingdom (and is mostly permanent), and the Incredible Tomorrowland Expo at Magic Kingdom, which is temporary and currently runs only through Labor Day, September 3.

This past weekend, an even briefer piece of Incredible Summer entertainment debuted: Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! concerts at the America Gardens Theatre at Epcot. It runs only until August 19, since that stage becomes the home of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival's Eat to the Beat concert series starting August 30.

As explained by a voiceover recording from a spokes-alien on Xandar, Capital of the Nova Empire, at the beginning of the show, recent events brought our "interesting planet" to the attention of the people of Xandar. Because Star-Lord, a "representative" from our world, explained to them that Epcot is "a cultural epicenter" on Earth, Xandar selected their "finest and brightest symphonic artists to share [Xandar's] harmonious sounds" and be their first extraterrestrial ambassadors to Earth.

The Xandarian Chamber Orchestra members begin their live performance of "alien" music, but they are quickly interrupted by Peter Quill (a/k/a) Star-Lord and joined by Gamora to "save the galaxy" from "bad music." Star-Lord notes the similarity of the alien instruments to those found on Earth and, then, with the remote help of Groot patching Star-Lord's playlist into the headphones of the musicians, teaches them some of his familiar Earth favorites. As Dewayne Bevil wrote in his coverage for Orlando Sentinel this weekend, "Don't over think this."

For those who recall the "Sounds Like Summer" cover bands that used to play at Epcot during this time of year, the "Awesome Mix Tapes" playlist consists of pop music hits mostly of the 1970s and 1980s; you can think of this show as a re-themed version of those concerts. Fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy films seem to especially enjoy the thematic overlay with Star-Lord and Gamora engaging in the sort of playful bickering expected of those characters. Personally, I found it to just be a fun twenty-minute show on the stage at Epcot that serves as a multi-purpose concert venue pretty much all year round; I certainly appreciate live musicians and singers performing familiar tunes.

The last major piece of Incredible Summer limited-time entertainment, Disney H20 Glow Nights (hard ticket events) at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, debuts June 21, which is after our next Update. The week after that, the Incredible Summer brings us the hoopla and dedication ceremonies leading up to the June 30 opening of Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Stay tuned!

Passholders Get Some Perks and Some Can "Bring-a-Friend"

Through June 29 (you know, the day before Toy Story Land opens at Disney's Hollywood Studios) Gold, Platinum, Platinum Plus, and Premier Passholders may buy up to six 1-Day Magic Your Way Park Hopper tickets for $79 each plus tax. The "Bring-a-Friend" tickets may only be purchased at the theme park ticket windows, the Passholder must be present and show photo ID, and the tickets must be used on the date purchased.

While we parenthetically mentioned Toy Story Land's opening in the last paragraph, another just-announced Passholder perk all but confirms that there will be no official Passholder preview for the new land. Instead, Gold, Platinum, Platinum Plus, and Premier Passholders should be "on the lookout for an event invitation with registration details in your email" for some exclusive access to Toy Story Land at specific times on select dates in September. Eligible passholders that want to attend will need to follow the email instructions to register for an event date and time in advance and, if they would like to register a guest, that guest also must have a Gold, Platinum, Platinum Plus, or Premier annual pass and be listed on the Friends & Family list sharing "All My Plans" in My Disney Experience. Attending the event will require the valid pass and a matching photo ID, but there will be no additional charge.

While Silver and Weekday Select Passholders are left out of the June "Bring-a-Friend" and September Exclusive Toy Story Land access perks, they do get an unexpected perk in June too: blockouts have been lifted through June 29. So, after last week's brief blockout, Silver and Weekday Select Passholders can park hop for nearly three weeks longer than previously announced (of course, the Weekday Select passes remain blocked on weekends). My Disney Experience is always your best source for such last minute changes—look in the "Park Info & Entry" section under "AnnualPass Blockouts" for your pass category.

For all Passholders interested in early access to the latest Toy Story Land-themed MagicBands, visit Mickey's of Hollywood, Celebrity 5 & 10, Keystone Clothiers, Once Upon a Time, and Walt Disney Presents, where you can now purchase them by showing your pass and matching photo ID (quantity limits apply, but, so does your 20% discount).

Likewise, all Passholders can now get a "double dining discount" (20% instead of 10% off) at Hollywood & Vine through June 29. Discount is valid for the Passholder and up to three additional guests off the regular price of food and non-alcoholic beverages (excluding tax and gratuity, and does not apply during special events).

Finally, there is one more Passholder perk at Disney's Hollywood Studios that is so inconsequential it previously escaped our notice, but it is available none-the-less: Passholders can view the extended sneak peek preview of Incredibles 2 playing at Walt Disney Presents, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. At 10 a.m., Walt Disney Presents opens to all park guests, and the preview is shown continuously during the attraction's operating hours through June 22. The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 15.

A Chance to Sleep Beneath the Floating Mountains of Pandora-The World of Avatar

Over a decade ago, the Disney Parks marketing team brought us the "Year of a Million Dreams" promotion which included rare opportunities to win a night sleeping in a Disney Park royal suite (in Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom and in New Orleans Square at Disneyland, respectively). Now, Oh My Disney, an official blog of The Walt Disney Company, offers one Grand Prize Winner and their guest an opportunity to win what it calls "the ultimate 'glamping' experience in Pandora-The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom." (For those that have not heard the term, "glamping" is glamorous camping, in this case, in a tent in the Valley of Mo'ara "with all the comforts of the modern world.")

To win the chance, visit disney.com/dcamp and follow all of the rules, which include making and submitting a video explaining why you deserve the "escape" to this #HappyPlace. (Pay careful attention to those Do's and Don'ts!) Open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia over age 18, you must be available for a phone/Skype interview on July 9 or 10 to win, and you must travel in the time period of July 28-31 if you win the Grand Prize. Not only does the Grand Prize winner get the night of "glamping" in Pandora, but the entire prize includes a 4-day/3-night package of accommodations and roundtrip airfare, 2 Park Hopper tickets, Disney VIP Tour Guides, Memory Maker, a $250 Disney Gift Card and more "unique experiences and surprises along the way."

Epcot Concert & Candlelight Processional News & Calendar

With the Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! concert series now running daily through August 19 (with published showtimes at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., and 8 p.m.), Disney has now announced the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival's Eat to the Beat concert series performers starting August 30 (for all dates but October 11-12 and October 13-14, and we have updated our calendar accordingly). Passholders can take advantage of early booking for select Festival and dining package events starting today; starting this Thursday, June 14, all guests can book Eat to the Beat dining packages, as well as other Food and Wine Festival events like Party for the Senses, seminars, and more. Visit TasteEpcot.com or call (407)939-3378 for reservations and information.

Looking even further ahead, starting November 18 and running through December 30, the Festival of the Holidays returns to Epcot with its Candlelight Processional beginning its seasonal run on Thanksgiving Day itself, November 22. Narrators for the three-times-nightly retelling of the traditional Christmas story accompanied by a massed choir and live orchestra have not yet been announced, and dining package information is not yet available.

For the convenience of our readers, we list all of the scheduled acts in our Google Calendar of Epcot Events. You can also add it or any events on it to any calendar that supports the iCal format (like iPhone and Mac) by copying this link. When the Candlelight Processional celebrity narrators are announced, we will add the events to our calendar as well.

The calendar is provided as a courtesy "as is, where is" without any guarantees. Given the effort it took to create it, we do respectfully request that you do not post our entire calendar on another site without first asking our permission. Walt Disney World Resort does provide schedules in the My Disney Experience app, but does not allow you to add dates to calendars outside the app itself.

Views Around the World

Like last week, we have quite a few views the construction of the new Guardians of the Galaxy-themed coaster coming to Epcot. I also visited Disney Springs, so we have views of some of the on-going construction projects there too. Some bits of news are sprinkled in the captions as always.

…Last week we noted that Walt Disney World Resort announced that Minnie Van Service is now available to anyone visiting the Resort using the Lyft app (in other words, it is no longer limited to guests at specific resorts). Introduced last summer after Disney announced the service at D23 Expo, Minnie Van Service provides private, point-to-point service around the property for a flat fee (currently $25) in a van driven by a Disney Cast Member. When visiting the Resort and using the My Disney Experience App, you may be prompted to set up the Minnie Van service on your device.

…Paddlefish at Disney Springs has a few special offerings coming up (updated with with one additional special):

Current Discounts & Promotions

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Walt Disney World Resort Update. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the intended audience. Check out the category that best matches you, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers.

Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. It is increasingly true that non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). As prices go up, it becomes even more important to pay heed: Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

The "glamping" contest prize looks really cool (as long as the tent is air conditioned!), but I went to take a look at the entry process and they are making you WORK for that entry. I suppose that helps cut down the number of video submissions they receive. I'll leave it to some younger folks to win that one.
