Walt Disney World Resort Update for November 6-12, 2018

Writer's note: Just like that, the Walt Disney World Resort switches from Halloween to Christmas. Magic Kingdom held its final Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party on October 31; by the time the park opened on November 1, all of the Halloween decor was gone and Christmas began to appear. Disney also starts recording its various winter holiday television specials around the resort this week too (with cast members and their guests making up the invited concert audiences around the Resort).

Before we get to the News and Views, thanks to those of you that followed us over to Instagram this week for the Oogie Boogie Popcorn Bucket giveaway. Keep following us on social media for more of that sort of thing; congrats to Anne Galko who has already received Oogie!

Congrats to our Instagram follower, Anne Galko, who received the Oogie Boogie Popcorn Bucket from this year's Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

Epcot International Festival of the Arts Returns in January

2017's pleasant surprise debut and this year's outstanding encore leads to January 2019's return of the Epcot International Festival of the Arts. Starting on January 18 and running daily through February 25, the celebration of visual, culinary and performing arts will again include special entertainment, interactive workshops, immersive art experiences and world-class cuisine.

The Disney on Broadway Concert Series also returns along with the Festival. Unlike past years which ran only "Disney Weekends" (Thursdays through Mondays), this year's concerts are scheduled three times nightly for the entire 39-day run of the festival. The rotating lineup will include music from The Lion King, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and more. The exact schedule of which artists will perform on which dates has not yet been announced, but the performers announced include:

  • Meredith Inglesby (The Little Mermaid) and Steve Blanchard (Beauty and the Beast)
  • Arielle Jacobs and Adam Jacobs (Aladdin)
  • Heidi Blickenstaff (Freaky Friday) and Gavin Lee (Mary Poppins)

#ShareYourEars to Help Raise $2 million for Make-A-Wish

As Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix reported yesterday in the Disneyland Resort Update:

It's time to Share Your Ears again, as Disney kicks off its third annual campaign benefiting Make-A-Wish. For the 2018 promotion, announced Sunday night during “Mickey’s 90th Spectacular” on ABC, Disney pledged a donation of up to $2 million to Make-A-Wish to help children with life-threatening illnesses. This donation doubles the amount pledged during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns.

Fans can help generate up to $2 million is donations for Make-A-Wish when they share a photo of their ears on social media sites. Photo © Disney.

Fans help generate donations each time they share a public photo of Mickey Mouse ears—or any "creative ears"—on social media sites Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #ShareYourEars. Disney will donate $5 per photo, up to $2 million.
Beginning [yesterday,] Monday, November 5, both the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort have themed photo walls where visitors can take photos for the promotion. The ships of the Disney Cruise Line will also offer a special backdrop.
Disney Stores around the country will offer visitors a place to decorate a pair of paper Mickey Mouse ears, then snap a picture in a special #ShareYourEars photo frame.

You don't need to stop by an official Disney photo spot to participate; any public share with the #ShareYourEars hashtag made on one of the three social media sites will qualify. The 2018 campaign runs through November 17, 2018. Learn more about the promotion at ShareYourEars.org.
Disney's partnership with Make-A-Wish dates back to 1980, when the company was part of the first official wish granted by the organization. Since then, Disney has helped grant over 130,000 wishes, with an additional 10,000 Disney wishes granted each year. Bob Chapek, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, recently joined the Make-A-Wish America board of directors.

Runners with Tampa Ties Win Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

The Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend concluded on Sunday, November 4, with both the first male and female finishers in the half marathon having ties to Tampa, Florida. Tyler Wasieleski of Union City, California, won the race in 1:11:48, only one second off the fastest time ever. He grew up in Tampa, Florida. Megan Curham who now lives in Tampa was the first female finisher, with a race time of 1:19:59. She grew up in New Jersey.

Both winners well-outraced the next closest finishers. The second place male finisher was Samuel Fazioli of Salem, New Hampshire (1:12:34); Roger Hildago of Auburndale, Florida, was third (1:19:00). Amanda Beal of Ellicott City, Maryland, was the second female finisher (1:29:09), and Valery Perry of Oviedo, Florida was third (1:29:26). More than 14,000 runners participated in the half marathon.

runDisney noted that the race weekend also included a New York runner's inspiring quest to run the half marathon with only one lung. Debbie Rogers of Westchester, New York, injured her foot in the Walt Disney World Marathon back in January. Her resulting visit to the doctor became life-altering when her doctors discovered a tumor on her right lung. The very early discovery of the cancer allowed doctors to remove part of her right lung, and she recovered from the surgery in time to run this weekend's half marathon.

"Had I not trained for the Disney marathon and not have had a running injury and not have completed the marathon, they would have found the lung cancer too late," Rogers said. "It is very, very rare to find early stage lung cancer!"

The Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon is the first of four runDisney race weekends at Walt Disney World Resort during the 2018-2019 race season. Nearly 35,000 runners participated in the weekend's events, including the shorter distance races, kid races, and a health and fitness expo. Next up is the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, January 9-13, 2019.

New Park-Hoping Florida Resident Ticket Special

As Disney said when it rolled out the new date-based ticketing system last month, Walt Disney World Resort continues to offer Florida resident discount ticket programs. Last week, Disney sweetened the offer of saving 30% on a 3-day ticket or 40% on a 4-day ticket by including the Park Hopper option at no additional charge for tickets purchased by December 16, 2018, with a selected start date on or before December 16, 2018. Visit this page of DisneyWorld.com for more information and purchasing options. Proof of Florida residence will be required at park entrance.

Traffic Change Reminder For Disney's Hollywood Studios

As we mentioned last week, in anticipation of next year's opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and the likely biggest crowds to date at this park, Disney has constructed a new entry road and toll plaza for guests entering the parking lot. Starting this Thursday, November 8, guests driving to the park will only be able to enter the parking lot from the new entrance road located off of Osceola Parkway. An access road will also feed into the same toll plaza off of southbound Victory Way. The parking lot will also exit to Osceola Parkway rather than Buena Vista Drive.

Starting November 8, all guest cars will enter the parking lot for Disney's Hollywood Studios from new access roads. Map via Disney Parks Blog.

The current main entrance route off of World Drive and Osceola Parkway will be converted to a cast members-only entrance. The existing entrance on Buena Vista Drive will be dedicated to bus traffic. In recent weeks, we have shown photos of the on-going construction to the bus loops, the adjustment of the tram lanes, and the construction of the upcoming Disney Skyliner station in the parking lot. We add some new photos of those projects here. Disney has not announced completion dates for any of those projects yet.

Epcot Concert & Candlelight Processional News & Calendar

Before we get to the above-mentioned Epcot International Festival of the Arts and the Disney on Broadway Concert Series in January, of course, the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays begins on November 18, with additional entertainment by holiday storytellers and musical acts all around the park. Starting on Thanksgiving night, November 22, and running until December 30, the Candlelight Processional returns to the America Gardens Theatre for the traditional retelling of the story of Christmas with celebrity narrator, live orchestra, and mass choir. This week, Disney announced the rest of the narrators, completing the line-up for the season. Our Candlelight Processional at Epcot Guide lists the dining packages available for breakfast, lunch and dinner around Epcot and its neighboring resorts, and the up-to-date listing of celebrity narrators. You can also visit this page of DisneyWorld.com for Candlelight dining package information and reservations.

The Candlelight Processional will debut at Epcot this year on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, and is scheduled to run three times nightly through December 30. Pat Sajak is scheduled to return as a celebrity narrator again this year. File Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

By next week's Update, this year's run of of the Eat to the Beat Concert Series at the America Gardens Theatre and the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival will have wrapped up with its last concerts on November 12. For those looking to attend the last concerts, remember that the new Quick Service dining package option continues to be offered available daily at Liberty Inn at The American Adventure pavilion (no advanced reservations, with availability status noted on a sign out front): $29.99/person plus tax, guests purchase a meal (entrée, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage) and get a guaranteed concert seat. The usual Table Service dining packages that include guaranteed concert seats may still be available by visiting TasteEpcot.com or calling (407) 939-3378.

Outside Liberty Inn, a sign advertises the Quick Service guaranteed concert seating packages remaining for the evening's performances of the Eat to the Beat Concert Series during this year's Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. File photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Our Google Calendar of Epcot Events includes a list of the scheduled performers (but, as always, check the My Disney Experience app, Times Guide, and, yes, sometimes even signs posted at the park entrances and at the theater noting last minute changes).

The Food & Wine Festival also includes a second concert venue on Friday and Saturday evenings in conjunction with the new Disney Du Jour Dance Party at the Fountain View Stage in Future World. Different pairs of Disney characters stop by each weekend (Remy and Emile from Disney-Pixar's Ratatouille, Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps from Zootopia, Lilo and Stitch, or classic favorites such as Chip 'n ' Dale or Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar). The Disney Du Jour Dance Party is highlighted by a special concert appearance by an up-and-coming artist from Radio Disney.

For the convenience of our readers, all of the 2018 scheduled performances at America Gardens Theatre are shown in our Google Calendar of Epcot Events. With the recently announced dates for the Disney on Broadway Concert Series and Garden Rocks Concert Series in 2019, we have added entries for the daily schedule and we will update those as performance details are announced.

You can add the whole Event calendar to any calendar that supports the iCal format (like iPhone and Mac) by copying this link. The calendar is provided as a courtesy "as is, where is" without any guarantees. Given the effort it took to create it, we do respectfully request that you do not post our entire calendar on another site without first asking our permission. Walt Disney World Resort does provide schedules in the My Disney Experience app, but does not allow you to add dates to calendars outside the app itself.

Views Around the World

I ventured over for a look at Magic Kingdom on November 1, after the wrap-up of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, and, sure enough, the Halloween decor was gone and some of the Christmas decor was already in place. Donald and Bonnie Fink visited yesterday, and, sure enough, all of the Christmas decor is now in place with Mickey's Very Mery Christmas Party to have its first event this Thursday. We have been invited to visit on Friday night, so watch MousePlanet social media accounts on November 9 for live and near-live coverage with a wrap-up next week.

Views this week also include Disney's Hollywood Studios where the Flurry of Fun also gets underway later this week. And, whether you are new to the Update or just forgot, our Disney Springs views are now part of a whole section devoted just to Disney Springs.

This and That…

…As we approach the start of Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party events at Magic Kingdom later this week, last week the park announced an extra-charge party that guests attending the separately ticketed event evenings at Magic Kingdoms can add on: Tony's Most Merriest Town Square Party. For $99 plus tax (plus admission to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party), from 9:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m., guests can "indulge in savory hors d’oeuvres including a selection of artisanal meats and cheeses as well as Tony’s famous meatballs, mini hand-tossed pizzas, boursin-stuffed artichoke and more! And if you’re wanting to satisfy that sweet tooth, then you can snack on pumpkin tartlets, Yule Logs, cannoli, Christmas cookies, and red velvet cupcakes," plus there will be "complimentary beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages" available. Tony's Party also includes reserved viewing for the 11 p.m. showing of Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade. Reservations and more information are available online or by calling (407)827-7348.

…Looking to ringing in 2019, reservations are open for the three parties at Disney's Contemporary Resort: Pixar Party: A New Year's Eve Celebration on the second level of the Convention Center featuring characters from Toy Story, Inside Out, The Incredibles, Up, and Finding Nemo, and lots of kids activities ($190/person including tax and gratuity); Disney Countdown to Midnight: A New Year's Eve Celebration in the Fantasia Ballroom, featuring "cheftainment" and cuisine from California Grill, Flying Fish, Jiko and Narcoosee's, an interactive DJ playing music from the 1960's to today and a New Year's Eve Bash Band ($275/person including tax and gratuity); and the Disney Ink & Paint Club which includes everything in the Disney Countdown to Midnight party plus a VIP Lounge experience in The Sorcerer's Apprentice Ballroom, including even more food and live entertainment ($450/person including tax and gratuity). Call (407)WDW-Dine to book or follow each of those links we provided.

…This December and in 2019, the separate admission ticket required Disney After Hours events will expand to both Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom. Like the Disney After Hours events at Magic Kingdom, guests who purchase this ticket will be allowed in the park before regular operating hours closing time and can enjoy ice cream, popcorn and select beverages during the three additional hours they are allowed in the park and able to enjoy some of the attractions with little or no wait. At Disney's Hollywood Studios, the new Toy Story Land attractions will be open, plus Rock'n Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror and more (as yet unspecified). At Disney's Animal Kingdom, the popular Pandora-The World of Avatar attractions will remain open and more (also unspecified). We have added the dates for each park to our Resort Events list; event tickets cost $125 plus tax in advance; $129 plus tax for same-day purchases. Disney Vacation Club Members and Annual Passholders can get a discounted price of $95 plus tax. Magic Kingdom After Hours tickets are on-sale now; the other parks will be available starting November 15. Visit the Disney After Hours page of DisneyWorld.com for more information and tickets for Magic Kingdom; call (407)939-7795 for the other parks.

…Just a friendly reminder to check the closing time for your favorite attractions when you get to a park for a visit. For example, at least on some nights this week, Kilimanjaro Safaris has reverted back to an operating schedule where some nights it closes before the rest of the park (last night, it was scheduled to close at 6:30 p.m. while the park was scheduled to be open until 8 p.m.).

…The Play Disney Parks app now has a feature called "Stories of the Enchanted Gallery" where you can create your own themed art by visiting places around Disney's Art of Animation Resort. We have not tried this out yet but will soon? Have any of our readers? Let us know!

…Beyond the Resort, Disney Stores are decorated for the holidays too. The Florida Mall in Orlando, usually a less than a half an hour drive from the Resort toward Orlando International Airport, is decorated with this year's "There's Magic in Store" theme.

"There's Magic in Store" signs are displayed throughout the Disney Store at Florida Mall. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

…Also beyond the Resort, Disney Cruise Line guests in 2019 will be the first to meet Captain Marvel when she makes her debut during Marvel Day at Sea. She will be featured on select Disney Magic sailings departing from Miami, Florida, from January 6 through March 8, 2019. Captain Marvel joins the event’s line-up of Super Heroes and villains, including Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Loki, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange and more. In addition to these heroic encounters, Marvel Day at Sea features a deck show spectacular, themed youth activities, special merchandise, and unique food and beverage offerings.

…For those job hunting in Central Florida, the new Margaritaville Resort Orlando opening in Kissimmee in early 2019 is hosting a two-day job fair next Wednesday and Thursday, November 14-15, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., for all supervisory and front-line positions including front desk, cashiers, culinary, servers/bartenders, housekeeping, engineering, room service, recreation/activities, and spa technicians/therapists. The resort is located 8011 Fins Up Circle, Kissimmee, FL 34747 (Turn into Rolling Oaks Blvd and enter Rolling Oaks Commons Shopping Plaza; continue straight past Super Target to your right; make a left at the stop sign and enter the building’s parking lot). For more information about Margaritaville Resort Orlando, visit its website.

Earl of Sandwich NEW Holiday Sandwiches and More

Saturday, November 3, was National Sandwich Day. To celebrate, Earl of Sandwich invited the media (including MousePlanet) to the Disney Springs restaurant to sample its holiday offerings now available at all of its locations (including its re-opened location at Disneyland Resort). This year marks the debut of the Holiday Ham (available through December 31) which is a sandwich of ham, cheddar, yams, and cranberry sauce on freshly toasted artisan bread. The mainstay Holiday Turkey is available too, a sandwich of turkey, cornbread stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and mayonnaise on freshly toasted artisan bread. Earl also has a Peppermint Brownie available for dessert.

Status of Parking Availability at Disney Springs: NEW Construction Photos

Those who visit Disney Springs during the weekends or during busy times of the year at the Resort know that the two parking structures often fill to capacity during those peak times. Construction continues across Buena Vista Drive at the site of the new garage that will connect to Disney Springs by a series of pedestrian bridges. As the winter holiday season is rapidly approaching, the existing Orange and Lime garages are changing the space-available technology that informs visitors of the number of parking spaces available on each level of each garage, and, by lights above parking spaces, which spaces may be available. Disney has not announced completion dates for either project, but with the extremely busy season approaching as quickly as Thanksgiving, we bet there will be some more parking news soon.

New Hyper-Reality Experience Coming to The VOID

Last winter, The VOID opened at Disney Springs with Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire created by The VOID and ILMxLAB (the immersive entertainment division of LucasFilm). With the Disney Animation Studios film Ralph Breaks the Internet due in theaters on November 21, this fall, The VOID, ILMxLAB and The Walt Disney Company will present Ralph Breaks VR go give guests "a new multi-sensory Disney adventure...immersed in the worlds of the internet and online gaming with Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope."

For those that have never visited The VOID at Disney Springs Marketplace (or Downtown Disney in Anaheim or elsewhere), the physical space guests explore itself is pretty much a "black box" where the players wear equipment and a helmet that immerses them into a virtual world rather than the place itself. Thus, it is not surprising that Disney Parks Blog confirms that Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire "will not be going away" when Ralph Wrecks VR debuts. Staff at The VOID confirm this as well.

Retail

Current Discounts and Promotions

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Walt Disney World Resort Update. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the intended audience. Check out the category that best matches you, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers.

Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. It is increasingly true that non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). As prices go up, it becomes even more important to pay heed: Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
