Disneyland celebrates 68 years Monday

Disneyland commemorates 68 years on Monday, and while the off-year anniversary might be overshadowed by the big Disney 100 celebration, there are still a few anniversary nods.

On Monday, July 17, Disneyland will host a brief "celebratory cavalcade" down Main Street U.S.A, featuring Mickey and Friends joined by the Dapper Dans, the Disneyland Band and the Disney Ambassadors. The processional kicks off at 11:45 a.m., with stops at “it’s a small world,” Main Street U.S.A., and Town Square.

The Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe will offer an anniversary donut, described as "a vanilla iced donut filled with cherry compote and topped with whipped topping and chocolate sandwich cookies."

We also want to take a moment to celebrate our own anniversary! MousePlanet was founded on July 17, 2000, and we commemorate 23 years this week. To all of our readers, writers, editors, photographers and contributors past and present, thank you for your support.

San Fransokyo Square opens August 31

The transformation of the Pacific Wharf area into San Fransokyo Square keeps rolling along, and last week Disney finally announced an end date for the project. San Fransokyo Square officially opens on Thursday, August 31. Disney made the announcement during a small media event last week, where they also offered a first look at Baymax and Hiro, as they will be meeting guests in the land. Media were not permitted to take video of the new Baymax figure, which blinks and talks, but Disney did post their own video of the duo.

The media event also offered an opportunity to try a few of the dishes coming to the area's three restaurants. Disney published a foodie guide to the land, and some of the items are available beginning this week.

Lucky Fortune Cookery launches its new menu items this Wednesday, July 19. Chicken sandwiches are a trend on nearly every menu, and I was hopeful for the Karaage-inspired crispy chicken sandwich . Unfortunately the sample we tried was both bland and too salty, and ultimately not a hit. I'm still holding out hope for the Beef Birria Ramen from this location.

Lucky Fortune Cookery is also home to the new Baymax macaron, a white macaron with buttercream frosting and a chocolate-hazelnut filling. This tastes exactly like it looks—white with a bit of chocolate. There are much better macarons to be had in the Resort, so give this one a pass.

Cocina Cucamonga debuts its new menu item on July 26, the San Fransokyo-style Street Corn. Again, I was not impressed with this dish, and another reporter described it as "fishy elote."

Disney seems to be saving the best for last, as all of my favorite dishes come from Aunt Cass Cafe. The star here is a delicious curry beef served in a Boudin sourdough bread bowl. The bread didn't add anything to the dish for me, but the curry itself was perfect. Another tasty dish was the plant-based Soba Noodle Salad. This is a light and bright dish, great for this hot weather.

Aunt Cass Cafe will also serve Honey Lemon-Ade. I appreciated that this starts with a base of zero-sugar lemonade, because the yuzu puree and popping spheres add all the sweetness it needs. For dessert, order the Japanese-style Fluffy Cheesecake. I haven't had a proper "fluffy" cheesecake yet so I can't tell you how authentic this is. It was light like a ricotta cheesecake, and quite tasty.

Oogie Boogie Don't

If you didn't get tickets to this year's Oogie Boogie Bash, you're in good company.

First it was problems with non-passholders buying tickets during the "exclusive" Magic Key pre-sale. Then the online ticketing system crashed entirely when tickets went on sale to the general public two days later. When Disney finally restarted ticket sales after a two-week pause, the entire event sold out in less than 12 hours.

We used to keep a running tracker in this weekly Update, alerting readers to which nights had sold out and which nights were still available. In 2018 you could still buy tickets in September. In 2022, tickets sold out in under a week. 2023 year marks the first time they sold out in a day.

If you've been following this saga, you probably already know that resellers are asking up to $1500 for a pair of event tickets for Halloween night. Oogie Boogie himself asked, " Are you a gambling man, Sandy? " Unless you're willing to gamble with your hard-earned money, DO NOT purchase tickets from a reseller. Remember, each ticket is sold with a warning that they are non-transferable and not for resale, and Disney is actively seeking out resellers and revoking tickets they have listed for sale. You have absolutely no recourse if the tickets turn out to be invalid or voided.

Based on prior years' experience, here are ways you may STILL be able to purchase legitimate tickets directly from Disney. However, know that this is UNOFFICIAL advice, and policies and procedures change from year to year. Do not make vacation plans based on this advice, and please do not berate the cast members and tell them, "well, MousePlanet SAID!"

  • In person on event days – in 2022 a number of readers had success purchasing tickets at the Disneyland ticket booths for events that were otherwise marked as sold out, while other readers reported there were no tickets available when they asked. If it works for you on your event date, consider it Pixie Dust.
  • Disneyland Resort Hotels – if you are a guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, or Grand Californian Hotel), check with your hotel desk the morning of the event to see if they have tickets available for purchase. In past years, a small number of tickets were reserved for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests, and were released for sale at 5:30 a.m. the morning of each party. Officially, these tickets are intended only for concierge-level guests, but we've heard conflicting stories about that, and it seems some guests in standard rooms have been allowed to buy the tickets as well. If you're already staying on property, it doesn't hurt to ask. These tickets sell out very quickly, so don't wait until the party starts to try to make your purchase.

  • Friends or family – if friends/family already have tickets, they may be able to purchase additional tickets the day of the party. Again, a small number of tickets are reserved for same-day sales to help accommodate ticket holders who may have miscounted how many they need, or who had friends/family unexpectedly join them. As with the tickets reserved for hotel guests, these are very limited, and go on sale as soon as the ticket booths open in the morning. If at all possible, get there first thing in the morning to increase your chance of getting tickets. You must have the other event tickets with you, and ideally all of the people in your party - the cast member needs to see them, and cannot just trust your word that "so-and-so already has tickets."

This and That

...Toy Story Midway Mania closes Monday, July 17 for refurbishment. The ride reopens August 18.

...Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is closed July 17 to August 10 for refurbishment.

...The Disneyland Resort hosted the premiere of Disney's Haunted Mansion this week, but what was supposed to be a star-studded event turned quickly into a character meet-and-greet due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Instead of interviewing stars like Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis and Rosario Dawson, the media watched as Mickey, Minnie, Maleficent and others walked the red carpet. (We should note that that character performers are not members of SAG-AFTRA)

    • 2024 Disneyland Half Marathon – Sunday, January 14

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2022.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer

The California Resident Ticket is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers residents of California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:

  • The weekday ticket – starting at $249, three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 12 and September 28, 2023
  • The any day ticket – starting at $299, three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 12 and September 28, 2023

You can use every day of the California resident ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day.

The weekday ticket is $249 for ages 3 and up, is valid only Mondays through Thursday, and doesn't include weekends. The any day ticket costs $45 more, starts at $299 for ages 3 and up, but adds Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to your list of days.

For an additional $60, you can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.

You can also add the paid Disney Genie+ service to your California resident ticket. Although you can upgrade all three days in advance for $20 per day (for a total of $60 for the three days), our recommendation is to pay for the service on the first day, after you enter the theme park. This will let you make sure the service provides a value for you, to decide whether you want to spend the extra money for your remaining days.

Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

There is no "fuse" on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 12 and wait until September 28 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it's probably best to purchase early so you're ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates.

Tickets expire on September 28, 2023, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.

Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

Four Day Tickets
  • Four-Day, One-Park per Day Ticket – regularly $395/$370
  • Four-Day Park Hopper – regularly $455/$430
  • Disney Genie+ Add-On – $25 per day, per ticket
  • Advance purchase Four-Day tickets – check for current discounts and promotions from Get Away Today.
Five Day Tickets
  • Five-Day, One-Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $415/$390
  • Five-Day Park Hopper – Regularly $475/$450
  • Disney Genie+ Add-On – $25 per day, per ticket
  • Advance purchase Five-Day tickets – check for current discounts and promotions from Get Away Today.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website.

Any chance that link is bad? Or maybe it only works if you have an account on the site?

While I don't have any immediate trip to CA planned, I thought that was an interesting tip for any future plans. All I get is a white screen when I click the link.

I also tried Googling "Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau" and only found a site run by Dun and Bradstreet that seemed to be company financial information for a bunch of local businesses (there could have been event calendar info buried somewhere, but I did not immediately see something obvious).

Maybe this is it ? https://www.visitanaheim.org/events/...list&sort=date

Before I waste a whole bunch of time clicking around site(s) when I don't have an actual trip planned at the moment, I figured it was easier to confirm the link validity with the source .

    Thanks!
